Robert Downey Jr. often gets a lot of stick and criticism from people who believe that time and time again he basically plays himself on screen. Even with his terrific performances in movies like Zodiac and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (and surely from the looks of it Iron Man) you never really feel like he gets the credit he probably deserves.
It’s a criticism that probably has some worthy grounds (hell, I think I’ve leveled it a few times, A Scanner Darkly comes to mind) but there ain’t’ gonna be one person out there who will level it towards him for his role in Tropic Thunder.
If you don’t like anything else about this trailer, your damn sure gonna be taken away by every moment he is on screen…

Kudos to director Ben Stiller too for keeping the cameo’s from the likes of Tom Cruise and Matthew McConaughey absent from the trailer. A brief appearance would almost certainly have added more bucks to the taking but for the enjoyment of the movie it’s much better when we don’t know how they are going to show up.
Tropic Thunder opens August 15th (U.S.) and September 19th (U.K). I’m there opening night, what about you?
