Awful trailer for THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL

So it’s Keanu Reeves’ biggest role in a while and remarkably even for himself he phones it in. There is just no way to defend this. Even though it’s not in the same genre I have visions of The Wicker Man remake with every word that comes out of Reeves’ mouth.

I’m dumbfounded and shocked that in the age we live in today they have decided against using the “we are destroying the planets with our weapons of mass destruction” theme and instead gone for the eco-disaster plot. It’s terrible and quickly strips away the tension and power of the original film.

And in any event, why would an alien from another planet be concerned with our eco problems?

This is not The Day The Earth Stood Still. How 20th Century Fox got away with calling it as such is a mystery because the movie is completely different from Robert Wise’s classic that it deserves no comparison.

I would be less pissed if it was just called something else. Then I wouldn’t care. I would still say it looked awful but I would be less annoyed with it.

Co-starring Jennifer Connelly, Kathy Bates, John Cleese, Jaden Smith and Jon Hamm – the movie opens December 12th from director Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose).

I’ll reserve judgement until I’ve seen it.

Ok but just remember by paying to see these remakes, you are fueling the Hollywood remake machine.

You lose the right to complain when you give your money to Hollywood to see these films. It’s like when people don’t vote then complain about the government.

That’s why I go to press screenings.

Also – the trailer looks good. For another “oh no, the aliens are here” movie it actualy comes off as being interesting.

I have one word…”Boo!”.

I despise the music used in this … it sounds like it belongs in some slacker/drama, rather than a science fiction disaster film. Having said that, I like the visuals, and I also like the tone of that interrogation scene.

Whoa! The resident Keanu hater! What a surprise… we should just forget that the original Klaatu, Michael Rennie, wasn’t only more wooden than Gort himself! Keanu did a good job in that teaser and you are one of the very few that are saying the teaser isn’t good. You could be honest: it DOES look good. Period. And a Hollywood hater? But, why do you have a site about movies? Aren’t most movies made by ‘Hollywood’? What a little hipocryte you are.

So because the majority (are they… really?) say it looks good, I’m suppose to be dishonest and say I like it when I don’t?

Very little in the trailer works for me. I agree with what Ray says though, the tone is good… I like the repeating question of whether the world is going to end and I like the other actor playing off Keanu.

I clearly don’t hate Hollywood. I’m sick of a lot of their output because they have the resources to provide so much more, which I think could help them in the long run (i.e. changing Hancock to a lame summer blockbuster vehicle which will run it’s course after one movie instead of building a more worthwhile, slow building and intelligent franchise which could have made them more money in the long run… i.e. Batman).

We talk about Hollywood’s output everyday of the week. I would be pretty sick to hate film so much if that were the case.

I just think Keanu Reeves’ performance looks awful, yet again. It was a terrible career choice for him and I will say the same about every Nicolas Cage performance that does the same.

I don’t particularly like Clive Owen either but you will have noticed in recent years I’ve begun to see a change in his acting (apart from ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE) and I’ve praised him.

Trust me, I believe every word I write for this site and I will back up my statements.

Batman Begins is AVERAGE, to say the best. It is considered so good among fans because, let’s be real, the other movies were pure piece of crap. It is easy to rebuild a franchise out of something so trash. A big challenge is to make something impressive from a classic like DESS. THAT is a real challenge. You back up your opinions and I back up mine: the trailer is good. And I am not saying that because a lot of people said the same. And the pre-conceptions about Reeves are tired and dated. The man is there and to say he didn’t improve along the years is pure hypocrisy. he may not be consistent from movie to movie, but when he is good, he is good. The man gave us some of the best action movies of the last decade and can be incredibly entertaining. I’ve never seen him babbling around about being better than he actually is. And all that reaction over three bits of scenes when the man, playing an alien, is answering questions tied to a lie detector is idiot. Michael Rennie was wooden as hell (I have the movie here, it is a fact).

If it’s a classic, why remake it in the first place. There are so many spins on the invasion, why connect it to one of the greats. And Micheal Rennie wasn’t wooden( he smiled constantly). He was off, just like someone not from this planet would be. I’m not going to completely slam Keanu’s perfomance since I haven’t seen it, but it doesn’t project any kind of warmth that you got for Klatu and and kid in the original.
