In one of the most ambitious “movie list polls” ever conducted in the U.K, the world’s favoured movie magazine Empire have named Francis Ford Coppola’s 1970’s masterpiece THE GODFATHER, the greatest movie of all time.
Similar to the results of a poll conducted by the Online Film Community (of which we were apart of), THE GODFATHER still sits high and mighty above everything else.

Other facts from the list..
There was little love for the Brits, only two movies classed as U.K. productions made the Top 100. Those being A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (37) and well, er, um, CASINO ROYALE (56!). 56! 56! Fucking hell. The other Bond movie to make the list was GOLDFINGER.
HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN was the only movie from that franchise which made the list and only just coming in at 471.
Despite barely being two months old, THE DARK KNIGHT made it into the Top 20.
Classics EASY RIDER and SOUND OF MUSIC didn’t make the list, despite bizarre recent entries like SAW, INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL, 2 DAYS IN PARIS (why?) and SUPERMAN RETURNS.

Dude…the German movie magazine “Cinema” is the biggest and there the worlds most favoured movie mag. Tthe German issue is distributed in over 10 European countries – and there are several translated issues distributed in Italy, Poland and Hungary.
And btw – 10 years ago they made the same poll. With more then 50,000 readers.
I know, the Empire mag is British – but that doesnt mean its … well… good.
Dont be so biased. Everything British is automatically good. Especially in todays Europe every form of silly patriotismn is…outdated.
2 Points. There is no bias in the post at all other than stating that Empire is the world’s most popular movie magazine – something which is backed up by several authority articles.
Secondly, the article states “In one of the most ambitious “movie list polls” ever conducted in the U.K”. This is not to say it is the most ambitious (biggest) poll ever… simply the largest of it’s kind conducted by a U.K. based organisation.
I never commented on the quality of the Empire Magazine or the poll itself.
I never see “Cinema” on the new stands of my local book shop, which stock tons of French and American film magazines as well as Brit one’s but I won’t dispute your argument if you say it’s bigger.
I’m surprised they didn’t put Back to the Future on the list. They tend to give that flick a lot of cred on their site.
Definitely better than a couple of those pics. Best ever, imo.
