We want your questions for THE DARK KNIGHT audio commentary….

Posted by Matt Holmes on January 28, 2009 – 1:50 pm | 10 comments

Christopher Nolan doesn’t like doing them and so THE DARK KNIGHT Blu-Ray/DVD release went without an audio commentary recently. Possibly the biggest home video releases of all time went without my favourite DVD extra.

Well it’s just not right is it?

Obsessed With Film will aim to put that right on Saturday night. Barring any last minute changes (which is very possible with us and I know later I might regret this post), myself, Simon Gallagher and Dan Powell (who is a friend of mine away from the site) will be sitting and down and going through the film frame by frame with our own unique and honest insights. We are aiming to do this maybe once a month or once every six weeks depending on how successful this first one goes down.

So here I am basically begging for your questions or thoughts. If there’s anything about the film you want answered, our opinion on something specific involving the movie, anything about THE DARK KNIGHT, BATMAN 3 or even BATMAN BEGINS… please either leave it in the comments section here or e-mail us at editor @ obsessedwithfilm.com (remove the spaces) with the subject headline PODCAST, just so we know what it is.

“What did you think of the portrayl of Two-Face in the film…. what did you think of the brief appearance of the Scarecrow… what direction would you like to see the next film take”?

Those kinds of questions would be brilliant.

Anything you have to save will be greatly appreciated and will get full name credit on the site. Hope to hear from ya!

I am psyched for this!

Talk about the Scarecrow, why was he there? Was it a nod to the Bat universe’s recurring villains? I liked it but I can see where turning him into a throw away street punk may be cruel.

The Gordon conspiracy. Weak? I still don’t get why they had to tell the wife he was dead. Not sure either why he was driving the truck I suppose he was the only one that could be trusted? I would have skipped it in retrospect it’s a cheap ploy.

Love the ending but I’m not sure I want to see half of the next movie being wasted on Batman trying to cleanse his good name.

The movie is probably 10-20 minutes too long, what could have went? Don’t say Hong Kong because it’s the best action sequence of the movie. I didn’t like the final confrontation between Gordon, his family and Two Face.

Nice! this sounds really awesome. can’t wait to hear it. Now, my question: what do you guys think about the boat scene? I think this was the only scene that felt awkward and out of place.

Another thing: something that bothered me quite a bit in Begins were the little jokes that occured once in a while. It felt very forced and totally took me out of the movie. Do you guys feel the same about this? If not, are there any other things that just didn’t really work for you?
Don’t get me wrong: i love this movie, but i think it’s good to also look at the minor points.

…The cast and crew have iterated that the approach going into the sequel was not to hold anything back, not to save anything for another film, and therefore, the concept for a sequel that would follow THE DARK KNIGHT doesn’t (or didn’t) exist yet when the movie was finished. If this is so, then why was it that Wayne Manor hadn’t been rebuilt with the improved addition to the Batcave, as setup clearly at the climax of BATMAN BEGINS? Alfred even refers to the ongoing restoration of the mansion in the first scene inside the garage under the port. Do you think scenes showing us the cave may have been cut for time, or is the reveal of the new cave being left for another movie, in spite of what everyone says?

A sequal was clearly always intended, even if only sub-consciously. It ended on too much of a cliffhanger to be standalone.

Ruud on January 29, 2009 at 2:15 pm

@ Bob,

a cliffhanger? To me it was a totally satisfying ending.

Do you guys think that theres still footage of the joker left thats going to be used in the next movie? Kinda felt there was someting missing at the end when he was left dangling for the cops.

Bob on January 29, 2009 at 7:09 pm

Yeah a cliffhanger. Batman must, at some point in the near future, redeem himself or be ‘forgiven’ by the people of Gotham. Whereas Batman Begins ended with a hint that his crimefighting career was just beginning, Dark Knight ends with a massive TO BE CONTINUED.

I’m not saying the ending was unsatisfying. In fact, I found the final 45 seconds to be one of the few satisfying things about the film. But there is more story to be told, and in all respects this film does feel like the middle part of the trilogy.

@ Ruud.
I for my part loved the boat scene, one of my fav parts of the movie. I loved how they used the ‘Prisoner’s Dilemma’ in the film. I thought it was absolutely cleverly done and fitted in perfectly with the Joker’s message & also the whole idea of what the Joker was all about.
So I would have liked to know who came up with the idea and how the idea developed throughout the process of making the film.
Also, the use of the ‘Pirate game’ at the very beginning of the film. I thought it was fascinating to watch how they used those different game theories in the movie!

@ bob: ah, fair enough. i get your point now In that way i totally agree with you.

Hey great idea and wish you guys all the best producing this masterpiece^^

My questions:

Who shot who in the opening sequence? And if the bank manager didn’t gun down one thug, what would the Joker do?

Did the pen get into the bodyguard’s forehead in the pencil trick?

Can you explain the marked notes/cash Gordon and Batman came up with and what was the deal Gordon and Harvey made in their conversation scene?

Harvey’s coin toss at the hospital, was it good side up? Or did Harvey shoot the Joker regardless, but the gun was blank?

There were some articles on Aaron Ekhart doing the Two Face performances twice to get two different shots..what’s that all about?

How did the Joker turn up at Commissioner Loeb’s funeral without being recognised?

How did Batman turn up at Harvey’s party and says to the Joker, “then you’re gonna love me” without being noticed?

Is Scarecrow and the thug Harvey threatened to shoot at the dark valley the same guy? And is that thug the same guy that appeared in the boat scene where the big prisoner threw the designator out of the window?

What’s the bullet and fingerprint stuff all about?

What was Harvey’s plan after charging 400+ criminals at once? What’s he gonna do with 18 months of clean street?

Why did detective Stephens guarding the interrogation door when he could have locked it up instead? How did the Joker get a knife and held Stephens hostage? How come the Joker didn’t get blown up just like all other staff?

What’s your take on the Joker vs Two Face scene at the hospital? I reckon the coin toss relieved Harvey of taking responsibility for his own decisions, since his plans all went horribly wrong.

How did Harvey survive the car crash after killing Sal Maroni’s driver?

Isn’t the showdown between Two Face, Batman and Gordon tense? The actress who played Barbara Gordon should get a sticker for her performance too.

When Two Face was thrown off the roof by batman, the coin landed on the good side, what does that mean? Would Two Face still kill someone anyway if he didn’t get tackled by bat?

Who are the 5 people including 2 cops killed by Harvey?

Is Two Face really dead? Hahaha! Explain there’s no coffin and body at the funeral (some people say it’s just a memorial service not a funeral ><)

Are they gonna show how Aaron and Heath prepared for their roles in this year’s holiday edition if there’s one? Showing stuff like the make up, the comics they read, how they practised their voices, movements etc?

What do you guys think about the third film? Both DA are dead, major mob bosses are all killed, Reese knows batman’s secret and Remerez knows Harvey’s secret. I was always hypothesizing that Nolan planned for a trilogy, having the first story on the origin of Batman, while fighting against Ra’s and Scarecrow; second story is Batman vs Joker on Harvey’s story, third film was planned to be Batman vs Joker part 2, while the Riddler comes in to investigate batman’s identity and Catwoman develops a relationship with Bruce Wayne. The Joker knows Harvey’s secret but won’t tell, while tempts Batman to break his one rule by threatening Catwoman and the Riddler. The movie might end with Catwoman killing the Joker and when he’s gone the batman story basically ends. But what happens now? Black Mask becoming the mean tiger on the street and teaming up with the Riddler who’s rallying for public support for fame and attention?

Thanks for letting me occupying your space and good luck again on the project!
