Is Tom Cruise office-ridden in Lions for Lambs?

I’ve just stumbled across a new trailer for the Robert Redford directed Lions for Lambs and first off, it ain’t a bad trailer. The movie looks to deal with some real pressing matters but there’s two things that bother me so far about the movie.

The first being although it’s a relevant topic and everything, the movie kinda looks boring.

The second being that it doesn’t look like Tom Cruise is going to leave that damn office, which I can see what there doing (and they mention it in the trailer) that they want a powerful guy who can easily make decisions about people’s lives whilst he is comfy in his office (or is it a frustrated prison, hope they delve into that too) but it’s going to be a little annoying for the viewer if we keep coming back there for another bout of heavy dialogue and Oscar hopeful acting.

I dunno. I think it will be a relevant picture but maybe one that isn’t quite as exciting as The Last King of Scotland or Blood Diamond last year.

New trailer below, and the poster is of course above. Poster reminds me of a mid 90’s kind of political/thriller.

Tom Cruise hopes to taste some Salt

Tom CruiseTom Cruise is getting back in the fold after a year’s break in 2006. The actor is in line for another film, this time in the Terry George directed Edwin A. Salt. Both George and Cruise have yet to sign on to the movie but both are said to be in talks.

Kurt Wimmer wrote the drama. He previously scripted the remake to The Thomas Crown Affair (co-wrote), The Recruit (co-wrote), Equilibrium and Ultraviolet, the latter two he also directed himself.

The studio’s hope is for Cruise to play the title character, a CIA officer who is fingered by a defector as a Russian sleeper spy. Salt must elude capture by his superiors and sets out to reunite with his family and prove his innocence.

Hotel Rwanda director Terry George has just wrapped up on Reservation Road which is out in October starring Joaquin Phoenix, Jennifer Connelly, Mark Ruffalo and Mira Sorvino. I would expect to see a trailer for that very soon.

Any movie which stars Tom Cruise immediately has my interest. Variety claim the movie is a drama but by the sound of that synopsis, I would love to see this as a fast paced and exciting thriller. However, the choice of George as a director, would point to it going the character based drama direction, so I guess Variety must be right.

Wanna see images of Tom Cruise as a German?

So Valkyrie (which some news outlets now believe to be called Rubicon, ew!) has now begun principal photography in Berlin and a press release has turned up online with the some official stills of Tom Cruise as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the man who led the assassination attempt on Hitler for ‘Operation Valkyrie’.

Above is an image which shows the resemblance of Cruise to Stauffenberg and below is a full shot image of Cruise in his German military attire, sporting an eye patch at the same time.

Really looking forward to seeing this. Bryan Singer back to shooting a full on serious film from his Usual Suspects scribe Christopher McQuarrie and with the likes of Tom Cruise, Carice Van Houten, Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy and Eddie Izzard involved… how can you possibly not be?

Thanks to Rope of Silicon for the heads-up!

Germany bans Valkyrie again

Tom CruiseThe war between Valkyrie and the German Defense Ministry is back on despite previous reports that the situation had been settled. Filming has once again be banned for the movie but it’s not because of Tom Cruise. Instead it’s said to be because of the historical sites (specifically the Benderblock Building) and the worry from the Germans that they will be used in a manner that will disrespect the memory of those involved in the real life events.

Variety report that the local German community are however supporting the film’s wish to shoot at these historical sites and you have to believe it’s just a matter of time until we see yet another reversal from the Ministry on this story.

Come on chaps, get it sorted out! We’re living in 2007 now and with the film being shot from the P.O.V. of those who attempted to assassinate Hitler, it’s clear these men are going to be shot in a favourable light. Personally, I think this film is a great way to showcase to the world the lives of those who were brave enough to try and stop such an evil dictator whilst all those around him were hypnotized into following him.

I understand trying to respect history but there’s also a great benefit from the re-telling of such a real life event on our screens.

Tom Cruise

UPDATED: Thanks to Luisa and her ultra quick response, you can see the trailer over at Worst Previews by clicking here.

I hate the music that plays with the trailer and there’s something very bland about the film but it’s only a teaser after all, and it doesn’t want to give too much away.

Moviefone have posted the first teaser trailer for the Robert Redford directed Afghan drama Lions for Lambs, which of course means that anyone in the U.K. wishing to view it unfortunately won’t be able to as it’s “country restricted”.

The movie has three inter-cutting storylines that involve Tom Cruise as a congressman who interacts with journalist Meryl Streep, Redford as a proffessor who attempts to encoruage his pupils and a pair of American soldiers who become wounded in enemy territory.

You can attempt to see the trailer by CLICKING HERE.

If anyone stumbles across it on Youtube or somewhere else, don’t hesitate to let us know. If you can indeed view the trailer, let us know what you think of it.

Germany loves Tom Cruise

Tom CruiseThe German Defense Ministry is now going back on it’s statement from two days ago about blocking the crew of Bryan Singer’s World War II movie Valkyrie from filming at ministry sites due to Tom Cruise’s religion.

They are now saying that they welcome Tom Cruise and Valkyrie to film in their country.

More from The Hollywood Reporter

The source of the “Valkyrie” controversy seems to have stemmed from a posting on the Web site of conservative German member of parliament Antje Blumenthal. Blumenthal posted a statement Friday claiming that Defense Minister Franz-Josef Jung pledged to her that Cruise would not get permission to shoot because of the purported danger posed by his Scientology.

Blumenthal is a cult expert for the conservative CDU/CSU party and a longtime opponent of Scientology.

Does Germany therefore love Tom Cruise?

No not really. Scientology isn’t recognized as a legitimate religion in Germany and it’s indeed seen as a dangerous and brainwashing organisation. Believe it or not, it’s even under investigation by the German authorities who see the relegion as a threat to their democracy.

What a load of nonsense but it’s nice to see Valkyrie shooting in Germany where it should be.

Germany bans Valkyrie filming due to Scientology

Tom CruiseThis is one of those ugly movie related stories that rear their head every once in a while.

Germany Defense Ministry spokesman Harald Kammerbauer says that the country is refusing to allow the upcoming World War II picture Valkyrie from filming because of star Tom Cruise’s religious beliefs.

“[Filmmakers] will not be allowed to film at German military sites if Count Stauffenberg is played by Tom Cruise, who has publicly professed to being a member of the Scientology cult,” Kammerbauer said. “In general, the Bundeswehr (German military) has a special interest in the serious and authentic portrayal of the events of July 20, 1944 and Stauffenberg’s person.”

Ridiculous. How the hell is Tom Cruise’s PERSONAL beliefs going to effect a Bryan Singer ensemble movie into blurring the reality of what really happened on July 20 1944? The answer is it won’t and you really have to wonder if there is a hidden agenda here from the Defense Ministry, because it really seems like they are clutching at straws on this one.

Is it not more likely that the Adolf Hitler assassination plot and the way Germany will be depicted is more troubling to him? Are they just trying to find a way out here with the movie to stop them filming in their homeland?

Tom Cruise’s producing partner and CEO of United Artists Paula Wagner responded to the German Ministry’s comments…

“Aside from his obvious admiration of the man he is portraying, Mr. Cruise’s personal beliefs have absolutely no bearing on the movie’s plot, themes, or content. And even though we could shoot the movie anywhere in the world, we believe Germany is the only place we can truly do the story justice.”

Seriously I report on some crap for this site sometimes, but this is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard and just goes to show what ignorance still exists in the world. I mean has any Scientologist ever bombed anywhere or committed a terrorist act?

I mean they are pretty harmless apart from the abduction of Katie Holmes.

Hate to say it but this is the type of thing the Nazi’s would have done.

Rorschach found for Watchmen, Wilson hints at casting!!

UPDATED: Web is going Watchmen crazy today. AICN are claiming that Keanu Reeves actually priced himself out of appearing in Watchmen as WB weren’t prepared to offer the actor what he wanted to be in the flick.

They also claim that Jason Patric is up for the role of Dr. Manhatten, which Reeves was up for and hint at Thomas Jane’s involvement as The Comedian.

Also, Coming Soon have an interview with Patrick Wilson where he might as well be admitting he’s in the film. You can check it out by reading the report here… BUT THAT DUDE IS SIGNED!!!

ALL THIS HAS BEEN ADDED TO OUR EXTENSIVE MOVIE WATCH PAGE FOR WATCHMEN!

A huge rumor for the casting on Watchmen is making the rounds online and it’s such an unexpected but genius move if true.

Scottish actor Paddy Considine who had been attached for the role of Rorschach when Paul Greengrass was working on the picture has revealed on his official website (although I can’t find the comments) that Jackie Earle Haley has been offered the role of Rorschach in Zack Snyder’s upcoming film adaptation of Watchmen.

Haley recently was Academy Award nominated for his role in Little Children but I know him better for his turns in the 1970’s Bad News Bears movies.

I love this choice. It’s someone who will be mostly unknown to audiences (which is what this character needs) and he has the look of the guy down to a tee. I swear it’s him! Not only that but he’s a talented actor too (although I haven’t seen any of his work for a while now) but it’s the look that does for me.

Things are moving on this. We have seen Keanu Reeves and Tom Cruise turn down roles for the flick, if Jackie Earle Haley does the same I will start to worry that the script for this thing isn’t up to scratch.

Black Book star joins cast of Valkyrie

pfilm12319662876394.jpgMan, I’m so glad Bryan Singer is directing this WWII movie over Superman: The Man of Steel. This is exactly the type of project he needs to banish the memory of that disappointing superhero movie.

And just look at this latest bit of casting. Carice van Houten! She was absolutely superb in the Paul Verhoeven movie Black Book, one of my favourite performances of the year actually and now the thought of her doing another WWII picture… makes me really happy!

This will mark van Houten’s first Hollywood movie (as Black Book was made in Holland but done in the English language) though she has been heavily rumored to be the next Bond Girl. In Valkyrie, she will be playing the role of Tom Cruise’s wife.

Interestingly the story from Coming Soon says that Patrick Wilson, Bill Nighy, Stephen Fry and Tom Wilkinson ARE all cast along with Kenneth Branagh so Latino Review got it 100% spot on once again.

Shooting begins next month in Berlin. Can’t wait for this.

Trade Confirmation: Branagh in Valkyrie & related news!

kb.jpgFirst up, big congrats to those guys at Latino Review. Another one of there scoops has come true. Earlier this month, they told us that Kenneth Branagh would have a role in Bryan Singer’s WWII ensemble drama Valkyrie and today Variety have confirmed it.

His role will be that of a German general who helps Tom Cruise’s character in the assassination attempt on Hitler. Great casting here and it also bodes well for the names of Stephen Fry, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nye and Patrick Wilson who Latino Review also mentioned for the flick.

In related news….

Valkyrie screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie is all set to work on another war picture, as he is writing the script for No Man’s Land says Variety. The movie is being setup at 2929 Productions and Spitfire Pictures.

No Man’s Land will use three fictional characters to illustrate the complex reasons why the various European powers chose sides to fight WWI, and how the use of machine guns, tanks and other technology led to unimaginable carnage.

The drama will focus on three characters: an American ambulance driver in France who joins the French Foreign Legion and eventually fights for the Americans when the U.S. enters the war; a British soldier wrongly accused of cowardice; and a German soldier mired in the trenches.

It’s claimed the movies All Quiet on the Western Front, Gallipoli and Paths of Glory are the big inspirations for McQuarrie, who is said to be a big war buff. Once script work has been completed on No Man’s Land, shooting should finally begin on The Stanford Prison Experiment.
