Trades confirm delay and reveal full cast for JLA

The trades have confirmed last night’s breaking news that the JUSTICE LEAGUE film had been put on “indefinite hold” due to problems with the script that were unsolvable with the WGA strike ongoing.

alex-ross-justice-league.jpg

Variety and The Hollywood Reporter separately have revealed the names of the actors who were all contracted to the picture since November and who must now find other work in the hope that if this JLA picture ever gets off the ground again, they will still be wanted by WB for the parts.

Armie Hammer as Batman (21, Los Angeles, California).

D.J. Cotrona as Superman (27, Wallingford, Connecticut).

Megan Gale as Wonder Woman (31, Perth, Australia).

Adam Brody as The Flash (28, San Diego, California).

Common as Green Lantern (35, Chicago, Illinois).

Anton Yelchin as Aquaman or Villain (role unconfirmed) (18, Leningrad, Russia).

Teresa Palmer as Talia Al Ghul (21, Adelaide, Australia).

Boy did we dodge a bullet there. To be fair to Hammer and Cotrona, none of us know anything about those two guys… for all we know they could be the new Christopher Reeve and Christian Bale.

It was never so much the cast that bothered me it was just everything else that went around it. The storyline they were going for, the in and out continuity (Talia storyline was to intercut with BATMAN BEGINS), the timing of it and I just don’t think we as a movie going audience are ready for this yet.

What we can hope for now is that the JLA is delayed past the Summer, another director takes on Superman… gives Brandon Routh some real material and then hopefully our geek favourite Christian Bale can be tempted to star in a team-up movie.

Hell he’ll do McG’s version of the TERMINATOR. It can’t be beyond the realms of possibility.

WB finally come to their senses. JLA on hold.

IESB say that the big decision was made on Tuesday to put the JLA film “officially on hold” until “at the very least” the end of the writer’s strike, which would mean a probable June start date at the earliest. All actors involved with the picture are now looking for other work (which should be interesting to see who gets jobs in the following weeks, confirming their prior contractual agreement to the movie).

The last six months or so since this project really went into fifth gear has seen an Internet response to every single aspect of production like no other film in recent memory.

It’s shown to Warner Brothers indefinitely that there is an interest from the movie community in seeing a JLA film sometime down the road (whether it’s in continuity as we would all prefer, stand-alone, a Batman vs. Superman movie or whatever) and we all wanna see them succeed at this… but to do that they need a better plan than hiring high-school actors and going through money-rushed productions.

Warner Brothers and DC are not at the stage yet where they could make this film. Take note of what Marvel are doing. Let’s actually setup a Universe full of characters first, with good stand-alone movies before we can start considering team-up epics.

JUSTICE LEAGUE dead by Tuesday; MAN OF STEEL’s life support already off?

Warner Bros really are not good at making comic book films. In recent years the latest converts to Blu Ray have spent millions on developing tentpole movies based on the library of great DC Comics characters at their disposal, yet they have never really had that runaway, mega-hit – the type of hit that Tim Burton and Sam Raimi had with their first entries into the BATMAN and SPIDER-MAN franchises.

Sure, BATMAN BEGINS turned a domestic profit (only just), and SUPERMAN RETURNS may have had okay numbers (it’s status as a “hit” is comparable to GODZILLA and ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES) but when you look at the cost of the film, and more importantly the fact that many at the studio put their reputations on the line for it then the word disappointment is an understatement. Let’s not even mention CATWOMAN.

It should not be a surprise in the slightest that both the JUSTICE LEAGUE and SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL are crumbling. At one time both these projects were jostling for a 2009 release and WB controversially chose to go ahead with JUSTICE LEAGUE based on the strength of the script (more on that later) and the lack of movement from Bryan Singer’s team.

At the end of last year it was LEAGUE – with actors cast, a director ready and pre-production happening in Australia – which had the momentum. MAN OF STEEL was left dangling, Bryan Singer wanted to make VALKYRIE and THE MAYOR OF CASTRO STREET first and writers Mike Dougherty and Dan Harris decided they didn’t want to return to pen another Superman adventure.

The latest word from Entertainment Weekly is that WB have until Tuesday to greenlight JUSTICE LEAGUE, otherwise the film could get delayed until after the WGA strike is over:-

“The studio has a Jan. 15 deadline to either greenlight LEAGUE for a spring production start — meaning a summer ‘09 release — or push it into the post-strike ether.”

IESB backs that up with reports that the Australian crew are expecting production to close down if problems can’t be resolved. Bizarrely, one of these problems is a script in need of a rewrite. Hang on a second, didn’t we hear noises from the studio that the reason they were doing this movie is because they flipped over the script?

The first draft of the screenplay was handed in mid-summer and with George Miller boarding long before the strike there was plenty of time to get a shooting draft done. The fact that they didn’t, then proceeded to move to Australia, hire an entire crew (including grips, set construction guys, breadline workers etc) and then put them out of work at the worst possible time is just f*%$ing stupid. Did they hope the magic script pixies would somehow fix things in the midst of a WGA strike? What is wrong with these people?

At least Bryan Singer’s SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL didn’t get to that stage. Variety followed up a report from last week with a more detailed story about a solo Superman film. The prognosis is not good:-

“Inside the studio, SUPERMAN is not on any fast track, and word is that Singer may wind up not directing it.”

People hoping that the JUSTICE LEAGUE falling apart will give new life to Superman are sadly mistaken. A SUPERMAN RETURNS sequel has never really had any momentum and I always find with these rumblings the phrase “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” applies best. There is too much talk of JUSTICE LEAGUE and MAN OF STEEL faltering for there not to be any truth to it.

Once JUSTICE LEAGUE is delayed the studio will wait for deals to expire on the actors, George Miller will leave and that project will get cancelled – I’d almost guarantee it. Even if the WGA strike ends soon there is still potential for a DGA and SAG walkout, so if WB come out and say JUSTICE LEAGUE is “delayed” this week then they really mean “never going to happen”.

The studio allegedly has a new TERMINATOR movie ready to go for a 2009 release so at least the do have one blockbuster for next summer. The only problem with that is it’s been put together by the Halcyon group and WB are just acting as distributors, so they can’t expect a huge chunk of change even if it is a box office hit.

Another DC hero in I AM LEGEND

We’ve already tipped you off about the BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN billboard in I AM LEGEND. But what you probably didn’t notice (and I didn’t spot this in the film), is that there’s another DC superhero that makes a cameo.

The Times brings us the following picture:-

greenlanternial

Looks like WB have decided to drop a little Green Lantern easter egg into the film with a poster that looks like a riff on Alex Ross’ Hal Jordan. And could that be a Flash poster next to it, I can’t quite tell?

The thought of seeing BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN, GREEN LANTERN and THE FLASH by 2009 (the year Emma Thompson carelessly unleashes a killer virus on humanity!) are pretty hilarious. Warner Bros have proven that they can’t make any superhero franchise work unless pointy eared cowls are involved.

Today’s news leads me to believe that the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie is going to get scrapped. Anyone hoping this will mean a second chance for SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL then I’d advise you not to get your hopes up. Over the weekend I heard from a Hollywood superhero scribe that another Superman movie wouldn’t happen for a very long time.

The studio is way too concerned with the price tag for a potential sequel and don’t feel that the public accepted Superman the way that Bryan Singer presented him. I think all those rumours going around last week about Singer and Routh not coming back were probably on the money.

I have always been a DC fan, Marvel never gave me the same sense of awe or wonder that the likes of Batman and Superman did. So it bothers me slightly that we probably aren’t going to see any of these amazing heroes on the big screen for a while (if at all).

Creative teams are involved with GREEN LANTERN and THE FLASH, however WB/DC have been trying for years to turn them into viable movie franchises and failed. With the JUSTICE LEAGUE slowly untangling and Superman proving to have feet of clay, it looks like we’ll only have Batman for the foreseeable future (thank Rao for Chris Nolan!)

Brandon Routh the new George Lazenby?

Latino Review, the first website to tell us that Brandon Routh would play Superman way back in 2004, now breaks the news that the actor will not be back in the cape and tights.

Warner Bros is pressing ahead with plans to make a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie (though the strike may delay the start, according to Anne Thompson at Variety) and the Man of Steel in that film could possibly end up carrying over to the next solo Superman film.

This also signals the end of Bryan Singer’s failed (and costly) attempt to revive the franchise. The next time we see a stand alone Superman film, it’ll likely have nothing to do with the previous movies – a do-over, if you will.

Singer’s movie was a commercial and creative failure – yes, many people like his take on Superman but as a method of restarting a franchise it just doesn’t work. SUPERMAN RETURNS works nicely if you want to position it as the final movie in the Richard Donner saga, but where exactly can you take the characters from there?

Once the JUSTICE LEAGUE film was announced around a year ago it was clear that Singer’s number was up.

I do feel sorry for Brandon Routh, sadly caught up in the crossfire of studio politics. He wasn’t given much opportunity to shine as Superman and the role, which should’ve acted as a career springboard for him, clearly didn’t.

In terms of his career, and the future of the Superman franchise, the best thing both can do is this: rip it up and start again.

Eva in LEAGUE?

Filed under Justice League, Movie News

According to Aussie site News.com.au, Eva Green has flown into Sydney for the holidays to audition for George Miller’s JUSTICE LEAGUE.

evagreen

Green will avoid going to the Australian premiere for THE GOLDEN COMPASS, instead preferring to take her chances with the WB superhero movie.

The French actress, perhaps the very definition of ultra-hottie, only has half a dozen credits to her name but has still managed to make a fairly big splash in the movie biz.

Most of you will recognise her as Vesper Lynd from recent Bond movie CASINO ROYALE, she’s also appeared in Ridley Scott’s KINGDOM OF HEAVEN and will soon be seen in sci-fi noir FRANKLYN.

JUSTICE LEAGUE has some of the best technicians in the business working on it. Everyone from the director, producers, and effects crew are top of the line and have produced outstanding work in the past. It’s a shame that the actors we’ve heard about don’t really match up to the quality of the behind the scenes folks.

Green, however, is classy, and would be a welcome addition to any film.

The three main female roles in the film are Wonder Woman, Talia Al Ghul and Iris Allen; rumours suggest those parts are all cast with Megan Gale, Teresa Palmer and Zoe Kazan already in place.

Green may be auditioning for another part entirely, or perhaps things aren’t as signed and sealed as we thought with those other roles. I’d love to see Eva – my favourite Bond girl (sorry Diana Rigg!) – in any of those parts, I’m sure she’d be great.

Jay Baruchel vs. the JUSTICE LEAGUE?!

2
Filed under Justice League, Movie News

jaybaruchelUPDATE: I’m reliably informed that the film is still set for 2009, I’m guessing the 2010 date was an error on the part of the paper or actor.

The guy you see to the left, with “Hilary Swank version” resting on his shoulder, is Jay Baruchel. You might recognise him from films such as MILLION DOLLAR BABY and THE RULES OF ATTRACTION. He’s also a proud member of Club Apatow. Baruchel is usually good value in whatever he’s in. However we’ve yet to see him in a big-budget action film, something like JUSTICE LEAGUE/AMERICAN HEROES. Well, we might not have to wait too long.

A friend of mine in Canada was telling me about an interview with Baruchel in today’s Le Journal de Montreal, a French language newspaper that circulates in North America. Baruchel talked a bit about his next project, something he’s just flown to Australia for to start two weeks of rehearsals.

The whole article, which you can read here, is in French but loosely translated here’s the part that relates to the JUSTICE LEAGUE:-

“He’s been chosen by Warner to star in the next big fantasy action film, scheduled for 2010. The highest budgeted project produced by the Burbank studio, a secret for the moment.”

The JUSTICE LEAGUE had been scheduled for a 2009 release but could the WGA strike be having repercussions on the studio’s production plans? Maybe they will shoot everything they can early next year, wait for the writers to get things resolved, rewrite the script and then go back and finish it? Or perhaps the 2010 date is to leave more time for post-production?

In terms of the part he’s playing, my initial thought was that Baruchel would be one of the Flashes. It’s already been somewhat confirmed that Adam Brody is playing Barry Allen, but there still hasn’t been much talk about who will play Wally West.

However a little bit of extra research brings up this article from TriggerStreet which claims that Baruchel just left Dreamworks’ SHE’S OUT OF MY LEAGUE to play a villain in the JUSTICE LEAGUE.

Rumours have Maxwell Lord and Talia Al Ghul (to be played by Teresa Palmer) as the baddies the DC heroes must team up to defeat, along with whispers of the Man of Steel going all SUPERMAN III at one point.

So what role is the KNOCKED UP star playing? And if he’s in Australia for rehearsals then doesn’t that pretty much confirm all the cast is locked? Boy, this film certainly brings up an awful lot of questions!

JUSTICE LEAGUE are AMERICAN HEREOS?

Filed under Justice League, Movie News

A while back George Miller spoke about how his JUSTICE LEAGUE movie would get a new title when it went into production next year.

Now both Moviehole and Aint It Cool are reporting that the film’s name will be AMERICAN HEROES.

Clint at Moviehole has posted this comic cover…

americanheroes

… which is apparently the name the series went under in foreign markets.

Was that in Europe and Australia? Here in the UK I don’t think I’ve ever seen the comic carry that name.

Now it could be a working title ala Blue Harvest (RETURN OF THE JEDI) and Rory’s First Kiss (THE DARK KNIGHT) but the fact that Miller has publicly stated that the name will change makes me think otherwise.

Honestly, why bother? If there’s any risk of people outside (and inside) America feeling it’s too jingoistic – and believe me there will be people who are bothered by it – then just don’t use it. Go with JUSTICE LEAGUE, the recent cartoon series was probably the most popular incarnation of the League and it carried “Justice League” without the “America” part.

However in SUPERMAN RETURNS, Perry White alluded to “Truth, Justice and the America Way”, and even though he didn’t actually say that line, it drew attention to itself and I remember reading a couple of space filling newspaper articles about Superman being “ashamed” of America. So Warners are probably damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

If they really must have “America” in the title then go with “Justice League of…”. Surely that has more name recognition than AMERICAN HEROES?

Of course, the name will have nothing to do with the quality of the movie but it’s always good to start with a decent title.

I like George Miller a lot as a director, I’ve yet to see a film of his a don’t like but there’s always a first time. I will judge this film when I see it but some of the decisions being made on this film leave me scratching my head. Let’s hope that Black Listed Mulroney’s script is really as good as people say it is!

JUSTICE LEAGUE will have a new title

George MillerDespite lots of silence regarding the film, including Warner Brothers complete embarrassment over their cast and their failure to confirm, deny or just plain announce who is going to be in their flick, the word from director George Miller himself is that the JUSTICE LEAGUE film is still on track.

Interestingly he also mentioned that the film would have a new title, which is something that was briefly discussed mid-summer when it was speculated that Hollywood would have problems finding a worldwide audience if they called the film JLA, or JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA because of the U.S. public image with foreign markets.

This is something that effected SUPERMAN RETURNS two years ago when the famous Perry White catchphrase, ‘truth, justice and the American way’ was to changed to, ‘truth, justice and all that stuff’ for a fear that branding Supes with an American tag would damage the reputation of the film worldwide.

Personally I would have just gone with JUSTICE LEAGUE. It’s simple and sounds pretty iconic and it doesn’t have that America bit tagged onto the end which would solve this problem and also sounds very old school comic book-ish anyway.

I’m now fearing some crappy Hollywood title with this one. Something like SUPERHERO’S UNITED, which just gives me the shivers. Inevitable though that it will be something as bad as that.

Kind of sort of “official” JLA news plus cast videos

1
Filed under Justice League, Movie News

I’m not sure what the hold up is in announcing the JUSTICE LEAGUE cast. There’s been so many rumours and “cast lists” that pretty much everybody who’s going to be in the film will have probably been identified by now. It’s the old monkeys-at-a-typewriter-coming-up-with-Shakespeare theory. Eventually the monekys get it right.

For now, I guess this LA Times article is the closest there is to something official.

Adam Brody has closed negotiations to play the Flash, the super-fast superhero in director George Miller’s “Justice League of America,” a source close to the deal said Tuesday. Warner Bros. Pictures, however, won’t confirm the news, saying the film still hasn’t been green-lighted.

The studio is expected to hold off on an announcement until all the roles are cast and a splashy news conference can herald the return of the beloved series. “Justice League of America” is one of Warner Bros.’ highest-priority films right now, with an anticipated 2009 release.

Brody has had a brush with superheroes before, getting the ultimate fanboy striptease in an episode of his TV show THE OC.

The paper also mentions Megan Gale’s alleged casting as Wonder Woman.

Brody, best known as the heartthrob on “The O.C.,” joins Australian supermodel Megan Gale, who was reportedly cast as Wonder Woman, apparently beating out Jessica Biel for the part.

Here’s a video of Gale from a recent talk show appearance. She has the looks for the part but obviously she’d have to de-Aussiefy her accent a bit.

Can she act, though? Personally I don’t think that really matters. If Tom Welling and Brandon Routh are proof of anything, it’s that the majority of geeks are perfectly happy to accept not very good good actors in these iconic parts so long as they look vaguely like the character.

Whilst on the YouTube jaunt I found a video of Armie Hammer, the 21-year-old actor who’ll probably be playing Batman. Hammertime had a part in a recent episode of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES where he flexed his acting chops playing “Hot Drug Dealer” opposite former Lois Lane Teri Hatcher.

Surprisingly after seeing that clip I don’t hate the idea Hammertime as Batman as much as I originally did. He has the build and voice for it but he’s still way too young. If the JUSTICE LEAGUE Bats was college age then great – but this is a grizzled, paranoid Dark Knight who sets up the Brother Eye spy satellite because he’s terrified of what the other heroes can do.

If Hammer wants to go all method as Bruce Wayne then he shouldn’t have a problem. Like Wayne he’s old money; Hammer’s great grandfather is famous industrialist Armand Hammer.

By the way, writing this post has made me realise how great YouTube is. Can you imagine the fun people would have had making early judgement calls on the likes of Sean Connery and Christopher Reeve if the net was around when they scored their big roles?
