Aliens in Indiana Jones’ future?

indy-sitting.jpgWe’ve heard rumblings about Indiana Jones’ next quest being set around the discovery of extra-terrestrial life for some time now, which is why today I’m quite surprised by the amount of movie sites that are getting so worked up over it.

I thought it was common knowledge? I mean after all, aliens and particularly Area 51 was the main theme around Frank Darabont’s rejected script for the movie, which at one time they were very close to directing.

This is what CHUD are telling us today about what they have heard for Indiana Jones IV…

Indy IV is going to be shooting outside of Los Angeles, in New Haven, Connecticut, in New Mexico and in Hawaii. ‘Belloq’ also tells us that the opening action scene of the film will pit Dr. Jones against Russians agents in Area 51.

One thing that is different from Darabont’s draft is the addition of Shia LaBeouf’s character; ‘Belloq’ tells us that LaBeouf is going to be playing a greaser, wearing jeans and a leather jacket and riding around on a motorcycle. He also says that Indy and Shia will be thrown together in this adventure but will not learn they’re related until a pivotal action scene.

Sounds like trouble if you ask me. I’m more worried about LaBeouf in the movie than I am about aliens! But anyway…

I would say that the main storyline remains roughly the same – it involves crystal skulls and takes its cues from Chariots of the Gods.

Well we all know how obsessed Steven Spielberg is with aliens, and the imagination and wondrous situations he has placed them in his universes over the years.

This has to be true, I’m nearly certain of it. I mean if you think about it, where the hell else can Indy Jones go after discovering the Ark of the Covenant and The Holy Grail? Only possible Mummies, but that has been done by Stephen Sommers already.

Could a movie about aliens work for Indiana Jones work? I would say with any other director ABSOLUTLY NOT but with Steven Spielberg, a man who knows how to create aliens in a believable setting… I would say YES. That’s what many people keep forgetting about this movie… It’s Spielberg directing! He hasn’t got it in him to make the movie look stupid.

Is Sean Connery in the Indiana Jones IV script?

indianaj.jpgThe news from Slash Film is that Sean Connery has not yet agreed to come out of retirement for Indiana Jones IV but his character of Indy’s father IS included in the script.

We have a script with him in it,” Lucas told Reuters. “If he doesn’t do it, we’ll do a quick rewrite.”

Which indicates to me that his role isn’t all that substantial, if they can easily do a “quick rewrite” and be done with it. If I was Connery, I would only come out of retirement if his role is an important one in the flick because otherwise you have wasted your come back movie for a couple of one-liners here and there.

You can only come out of retirement once otherwise people stop believing your actually done with movies, so if he does come back… he has to make sure this is the right role for him.

We’ve heard shooting is still set to begin next month….which sounds so weird. Indiana Jones filming in 2007, who would have thought it?

Indiana Jones IV trailer in November?

indianajones4.jpgThere are some movie writers on the Internet who won’t be convinced that Indiana Jones IV is going ahead until set photo’s from filming comes through (we believe in June) or better yet when a trailer for the movie is released.

You can’t blame them really. The roller coaster ride of this fourth installment of the series has been on and off again more times than John Travolta’s career. Although, what is true is that we have never reached this far into production without some sort of problem, I mean we even have a final script, actors cast, a release date and a filming schedule!

George Lucas has been speaking to USA Today where he revealed the first trailer for the movie will hit theatres around Thanksgiving time, which is in around seven months. Astonishingly, he also said he hopes the title of the movie can be kept under wraps until said trailer is released…… all I can say is good luck with that one George.

Speaking about Harrison Ford, Lucas said….

“He’s not running in any of the movies. He’s either on a horse or driving a car or a motorcycle. And he’ll play his age in this movie with what’s appropriate. The chases are more suspenseful than speedy. Like the rolling ball in the first film — it’s not that he’s running that fast, it’s that there’s a giant ball coming at him. And he will get beat up, which is a tradition for us.”

In the article he goes on further to mention that Steven Spielberg was the one who wanted Cate Blanchett for the movie, and on the subject of Sean Connery returning to reprise his role as Indiana’s father… the response was “We’re still trying”.

As long as his age isn’t the only focus of the film and there aren’t too many jokes about it with the story and plot of Indiana Jones’ last quest being at the forefront…. then his age doesn’t really bother me. As long as it has a good story…. the movie will be fine.

Indiana Jones gets a sidekick… RAY WINSTONE!

ray_winstone.jpgNo really. It’s not April 1st for another couple of days yet.

The Hollywood Reporter say that British actor Ray Winstone has signed on for a role in Indiana Jones IV, apparently as Harrison Ford’s sidekick.

I dearly hope, that the trade have got it completely wrong and the truth is Winstone has a role like Marcus Brody or Sallah from Raiders of the Lost Ark (not the third movie, which treated those characters as a joke) and not a god damn sidekick.

As it stands, we could potentially have Cate Blanchett, Shia LaBeouf, Ray Winstone, Sean Connery (although he hasn’t been confirmed for the movie yet) and Harrison Ford as a group of five adventurers. It’s becoming more like Scooby Doo.

No doubt he is a talented actor, and I’m fine with him in the movie but please don’t use him as a comedic secondary character like he was in King Arthur.

Trade confirmation: LaBeouf in final talks for Indy IV

200px-evensh.jpgThree weeks ago we told you that Shia LaBeouf was going to be cast as Indiana Jones’ son in Indiana Jones IV and that even though it was far from confirmed then, nearly every site on the Internet said it was likely to be true.

Well today, we got confirmation through from Variety who are telling us the actor is in final talks for the role.

Don’t know who LaBeouf is? Well he was the annoying kid from I, Robot and Constantine and he has the lead role in the upcoming Transformers movie. He could very well be Spielberg’s new muse.

Why we need a kid in the movie I don’t know but I’ve ranted about this before, so I won’t bore you with it again.

Indiana Jones IV is set to start filming in June and I think it’s really happening this time. Harrison Ford and very soon Shia LaBeouf are the only names cast so far.

May 22nd 2008 – INDIANA JONES RETURNS

Well I know what I’m doing May 22nd of next year.

Box Office Mojo are claiming that the currently titled…. FOURTH INSTALLMENT OF THE INDIANA JONES ADVENTURES will be released on memorial day weekend 2008.

This date would certainly make sense. Historically it’s the date reserved for the some of the biggest blockbusters of the year and is of course the date used by George Lucas for Revenge of the Sith, Attack of the Clones and the last two Indy Jones movies.

They have never got this far down the road in previous years with Indy IV, this time it really feels like happening.

This is going to be huge and will easily the highest earner of next year. Oh yeah, there’s no doubt that a Batman movie with The Joker is going to be insanely popular but this is frickin’ Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones!

Ford talks Indy IV – “I’m fit for the role”.

harrsison-ford-int-1.jpgEvery comment we hear from the trio of George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford point towards the fact they want to do an Indiana Jones IV and that they are exicted about doing it. So what’s taking them so long to get it done????

Anyway, Harrison Ford himself was been speaking about the project at the Rome Film Festival yesterday where he said this…

“We did three films that stay within the same block of time. We need to move on for artistic reasons and obvious physical reasons…I feel fit to continue and bring the same physical action.”

He went on to say that he believed that the “retired” Sean Connery would jump at the chance to reprise his role as Indy’s father but no offer has been made at this time.

I guess we keep waiting then for the next big annoucement of how one of the three is exicted about making another Indy movie. Just get the script done guys, how hard can it be? It’s not like you haven’t wrote a movie before.

Indy IV News

ss.jpgLike it or not it looks as if Indiana Jones is returning to the big screen. Empire Magazine have posted some quotes from a recent interview with George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford which are very interesting indeed….

“We’re basically going to do The Phantom Menace. People’s expectations are way higher than you can deliver. You could just get killed for the whole thing… We would do it for fun and just take the hit with the critics and the fans” says Lucas.

“Then Harrison really wanted to do it and Steve said, “Okay”. I said… with
Spielberg adding “Hopefully it will be different in all the right ways and the same in all the familiar ways”.

“There’s a good chance it will happen. There are things left for this character to do” says Ford, whilst a mid-2007 start of shooting date is scheduled (which would put the film on course for a Summer 2008 release”).

So it looks as if Harrison Ford will be returning as Indiana Jones after all. I don’t think he can pull it off any longer, he is way to old to play the part. Even if they do play Indy at the age that Harrison is now, what would be the point?

As much as I love the original trilogy and have watched it like a thousand times, I don’t want to see them do what Lucas did to Star Wars and make some half-assed movies.
I do like the new Star Wars trilogy, at least some parts of it, but to be honest I really wish they didn’t exist.

So are you for or aganist a new Indiana Jones movie? We had mixed responses from the casting couch on who should play Indy but some did think Harrison could still pull it
off.

I think they should just leave it be. The words of Sean Connery in The Last Crusade come to mind “Let it go Indy, let it go”.

Casting Couch #1 – Indiana Jones

7

Casting couch is a new feature where I will take a look at a coverted movie role for an upcoming project and run down the five leading contenders. (not the top 5 i think SHOULD have the role, but the top five who are MOST TALKED about)

This weeks movie is Indiana Jones 4 which is currently stuck in limbo. No-one seems to know if the movie will happen or not but if it does then who should play film’s most famous adventurer?

Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford, 64

Resume for role: Indiana Jones trilogy

There will only ever be one true Indiana Jones for most of us and that is of course Harrison Ford. At 64 though it really is difficult to imagine him in the role again, and he hasn’t had a critically or commercially succesful film in years. No doubt he WAS the best actor for the role, but can he still pull it off?

Matthew McConaughey

Matthew McConaughey, 36

Resume for role: Sahara.

At 36 he is at good age for the role, and maybe for future movies down the line. He has a certain charm about him but i’m not sure if he could be menacing enough in fight scenes etc. He played a similar role in Sahara and has another treasure hunt movie coming out in 2008 which will probably put him out of the running.

Dennis Quaid

Dennis Quaid, 52

Resume for role: Flight of the Phoenix

Certainly looks the part of Indiana Jones and he is a hell of an actor. At 52 though he even might be too old for the role, especially if Spielberg wishes to continue the franchise over more films.

Paul Walker

Paul Walker, 33

Resume for role: Timeline.

Certainly not the greatest actor around and is desperate for a big hit after The Fast and The Furious propelled him into the spotlight. At 33 he might be slightly too young to play Indy, but he does have the look and build for the role.

Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman, 38

Resume for role: Van Helsing.

Currently the biggest name actor on the list. At 38 he is probably the perfect age for the role. He looks the part, has the build and the acting ability to make the part his own. Only problem, he is of course already a big franchise actor as Wolverine, can’t see him wanting to take on two big franchise roles.

So folks take a look at the contenders there and leave a comment in the post about which actor YOU think should take over the role of Indiana Jones if another film is to be made. You do not just have to be restricted to that choice, you can add your own to the mix also.

My pick – Dennis Quaid.

This role eventually went to – Harrison Ford (May 2008 release date for Indiana Jones and the City of Gods)
