Ryan is the new Ryan?

Ben Affleck’s attempt at resurrecting the Jack Ryan franchise six years ago with THE SUM OF ALL FEARS was a commendable effort. I quite enjoyed it as a thriller, even if it wasn’t a patch on the Harrison Ford movies that went before it, or the John McTiernan directed THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER with Alec Baldwin in the lead role.

It’s rather surprising it has taken this long for movement on the next installment of the franchise which ten years ago was seen as the America version of James Bond, something that I guess the BOURNE series is today. Reports today say that Ryan Gosling will now carry the franchise with a shocker being that Tom Clancy won’t be involved…

gosling-ryan.jpg

That’s right, the word from Moviehole is that the new film won’t be based on any of Clancy’s writings and it will instead be a brand new ‘made for film’ story depicting a young Jack Ryan, similar to how Ben Affleck portrayed him. It will have no connection what-so-ever to any previous Jack Ryan canon.

The site also speculate (and it seems to make sense) that a script picked up by Paramount in 2005 titled BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY (there’s a Clancy sounding title if I ever heard one) from screenwriter Daniel Pyne (he wrote FEARS) with Antoine Fuqua attached to direct might be chopped and changed to be used as a Ryan vehicle.

Doesn’t it just piss you off when they do stunts like this. If it’s not going to be a movie in the Tom Clancy Jack Ryan universe then why don’t you just use the character from the original script, use Ryan Gosling… do it in the style of the Clancy movies but don’t use the name just to make some cheap cash. It’s false advertising from where I stand.

THE DARK KNIGHT vs. INDIANA JONES.

Which one tops your must-see list right now?

I think I have to go with Nolan’s flick but to be perfectly honest unless someone could resurrect Sergio Leone from his grave and get him to make films again, I think a Batman movie might be the only franchise that would be more anticipated by me than Harrison Ford as INDY.

The film opens on May 22nd worldwide. Can’t frikkin’ wait.

Comic book adaptation cover of INDIANA JONES IV

Has the buzz for INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL hit the mainstream yet?

Yeah sure, it’s easy for us to know that a new movie in the long-dead franchise is coming out soon but I’m just wondering if the ‘average Joe movie fan’ is getting excited yet?

I know the people I have spoken to have been shocked and actually appalled at the idea of a new INDY film with Harrison Ford at the age he is now and with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg coming back in what they see as a greedy money making venture. I think the recent STAR WARS prequels might have had something to do with this fear of it turning out shit.

I guess we all have an undercurrent of that fear don’t we? I think it’s existed in my personal psyche since THE PHANTOM MENACE.

Here’s the cover of the comic book adaptation for the movie which is just a couple of months away now. I don’t usually post this stuff but what the hell, INDIANA JONES is coming back. I’m turning into an excited child again…

LaBeouf takes on the Indy mantle for 5, 6 and 7?

Shia LaBeoufI’m not sure where I first heard this but sometime last week someone mentioned to me that Shia LaBeouf had signed on for future Indiana Jones movies after Indiana Jones and the City of Gods has been released. At first I simply dismissed it but IESB are running with that story today.

Apparently a highly reliable Paramount insider has told them that LaBeouf has signed up for his own Indiana Jones trilogy with Harrison Ford signing up to the same deal. This would seem to suggest that Ford will have a small mentor role to LaBeouf in the future films with the torch being passed in next year’s movie.

LaBeouf carrying on the Indy mantle for his own trilogy? I mean I know Steven Spielberg likes this kid but I just can’t see him carrying the series himself and especially from Harrison Ford’s point of view. He would surely only return to the films if he was the lead star?

The truth is they have probably optioned LaBeouf for potential sequels and installments to the franchise but at this moment in time the future of the series is the last thing on their mind.

The hat, the jacket, the whip… Indiana Jones lives!

Grease meets Indiana Jones!

indiana_jones_iv.jpg19 years ago Harrison Ford, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg were filming what they then thought would be the last adventure for the world’s most famous archaeologist with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. At the same time Tim Burton and co. were in England filming Jack Nicholson as The Joker for his Batman film, with both films released in 1989.

2007 really is the new 1988. Right now, Christopher Nolan is shooting his Batman movie with Heath Ledger as The Joker and of course Lucas, Spielberg and Ford are shooting Indy again what they believe to be their last Indiana Jones film.

Where will we be in twenty years time from today? Will Indiana Jones be remade by some young punk director? Will Batman being going through another franchise re-boot? I know it’s strange to think that, but if you told the respective crew of both films what’s happening right now… they simply wouldn’t believe you.

The image below was taken on Friday from the film’s set in New Haven, Connecticut and it shows Harrison Ford as Indy Jones and his “greaser” son Shia Labeouf.

It’s not the years honey, it’s the mileage!

And by the looks of things, Harrison Ford’s mileage is pretty damn good.

When you see images like these, it really is hard to imagine any other actor wearing that costume. The credit for the photo below has been given to Steven Spielberg, so there’s always the chance that this photo has been meticulously framed to depict Ford as young as possible but of course by May 08 there will be no hiding your lead star.

Still, Ford looks great. You getting excited for Indiana Jones and the City of Gods yet?

Broadbent confirms appearance in Indy IV

jim-broadbent03.jpgBritish actor Jim Broadbent has confirmed that he will indeed make an appearance in the currently filming Indiana Jones and the City of Gods, and as expected he is going to be the Marcus Brody type character.

BritFilms have the following quotes from the actor…

“I’m doing a good cameo in the next ‘Indiana Jones’, so working with Mr.Spielberg should be an experience. I’m going to Yale – I’m a professor.”

Jokingly it was suggested that he could be the new ‘Marcus Brody’ character.

“That would do for me (laughs)”

Great news then, Broadbent is as good a choice as any for this role. He becomes the third British actor to be cast in Indy’s latest adventure after Ray Winstone and John Hurt, alongside the two Americans Harrison Ford, Shia LaBeouf with Aussie actress Cate Blanchett rumored to be the villain.

John Hurt in Indiana Jones IV but Sean Connery ISN’T!!

sean-connery-good.jpgSome good news and some very sad news…

The good news is that the great acting talent of John Hurt will grace the screen in Indiana Jones IV which began filming this week! God, how strange is it to say that? Indiana Jones IV is filming!

It’s not yet known what role Hurt will have. Anyone care to take a guess? Good or bad guy?

The really sad news is that Sean Connery is sticking to his retirement and won’t make a come back for the new Indiana Jones film. For once an actor is sticking to his retirement announcement.

From the great man himself…

“I get asked the question so often, I thought it best to make an announcement. I thought long and hard about it and if anything could have pulled me out of retirement it would have been an Indiana Jones film. I love working with Steven and George, and it goes without saying that it is an honor to have Harrison as my son. But in the end, retirement is just too damned much fun. I, do however, have one bit of advice for Junior: Demand that the critters be digital, the cliffs be low, and for goodness sake keep that whip by your side at all times in case you need to escape from the stunt coordinator! This is a remarkable cast, and I can only say, ‘Break a leg, everyone.’ I’ll see you on May 22, 2008 at the theater!”

With him not coming back to Indy…his retirement really is legit. There isn’t another role on the planet I could imagine him coming back for with him turning down this one.

In the end then, Connery’s last role on film will be that of Allan Quatermain in the comic book adaptation of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. It was the perfect role for Connery in principle but somewhere along the way the film became a joke and his role dumbed down in such a way that any chance of it being a memorable last-hurrah wasquickly evaporated.

I was sure the great actor would return for this franchise but alas that won’t be the case. The role of Henry Jones Snr. has now probably been erased from the script.

So just like with Paul Newman last week, enjoy your retirement Mr. Connery. It’s nice to see that you guys can just walk away instead of holding desperately onto your former glory, never knowing when to quit like many of your peers.

An official press release for Indiana Jones IV was released by Paramount Pictures which you can read by clicking here.

Scene by scene breakdowns can be read by clicking here.

The good folks over at IESB also update us on a few things Indy related…

Indy doesn’t find out about being a daddy until after he and Shia have been teamed up for a while and during a pivotal scene,

So who will be a villain in Indy IV? Well kiddies, while most people have been assuming that Cate Blanchett will be Indy’s love interest since the announcement of her addition to the cast, several of our sources have revealed that she will actually be the villain in cahoots with the Ruskies.
