Schreiber is not Stryker, he’s Victor Creed?

Just when you thought those dummies involved with the production of the Wolverine prequel had done something right, this kind of news leaks.

CHUD carry the rumor from a 100% trusted source that Liev Schreiber has not been cast as Stryker in the shitty titled X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE as previously thought but instead it will indeed be t.v. actor Michael C. Hall (Dexter, Six Feet Under) who will be playing Logan’s arch nemesis.

Here’s the thing though, Schreiber is still on board… it’s just he will be playing the Victor Creed (a.k.a. Sabertooth) role. What the hell is that all about? A respected and proper actor playing the muscle man part that a wrestler portrayed in the original X-MEN movie?

Liev Schreiber

Victor Creed

Schreiber is quite tall and psychically impressive I guess but Sabertooth is suppose to be a frikkin’ beast of a man, only existing because he can go toe-to-toe with Wolverine for so great visual epic battles. He’s not a character with depth, shall we say.

Hopefully with the dramatic helmer Gavin Hood (RENDITION, TSOTSI) on board, his take on the Victor Creed character is more cerebral and a more intelligent depiction of the character than before otherwise this is one massive mis-casting.

CHUD have also heard that Michelle Monaghan (MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III) tops the list of actresses’ that Fox have on their wanted list for the role of Silverfox. Previously he heard that Maggie Q had been offered the role.

Michael C. Hall as Stryker is as interesting to me as Julian McMahon as Doctor Doom, Schreiber is a personal favourite of mine but as Creed (WTF!) and Michelle Monaghan is a great actress who’s had a nice run of performances recently but this role is not suited to her and if anything it’s beneath her talents.

More madness from a franchise which seems to have completely lost it’s direction. The prequel is set to open May 19th 2009, with Hugh Jackman returning to the lead role.

Liev Schreiber is the new Stryker in WOLVERINE!

20th Century Fox have done the right thing by pushing back the release date of Wolverine from late 2008 to a May 1st 2009 opening. This gives the crew that little extra breathing room to complete post-production after what should be a hectic filming schedule because of the two upcoming strikes.

Variety are also telling us that Liev Schreiber is in final talks for the William Stryker role that Brian Cox absolutely owned in X-Men 2. Schreiber will be playing a younger version of Stryker because as the character says in X2, ‘Wolverine hasn’t aged a day’ but Stryker’s only human so time has not been his friend in X-Men 2.

This X-Men prequel is set to begin some thirty years before the events of the first movie…

Liev Schreiber

I find this casting interesting on a number of different levels. First of all back in February when Brian Cox was on the Jonathan Ross show here in the U.K. he claimed he had already been asked to star in the movie and that he was expecting the crew to use the same anti-aging CGI effects that were used on Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart in the last X-Men movie.

So either they think this technology is not up to scratch or they have decided to go the old fashioned way by casting someone younger but whatever the case it is an interesting thing to think about. What does this mean for Magneto for example? Will they dump McKellen and Stewart for most of the scenes and cast young for that too?

I like Liev Schrieber, I think he’s extremely under-rated and the only thing that has stopped him getting the big roles is some of the bad career choices he has made. I absolutely adored his performance in the Scream trilogy and he’s great in The Manchurian Candidate.

As you all know he was my first choice for the Harvey Dent role in The Dark Knight for many years, mainly because he’s so good at playing a good character on the outside but with the projection that his mind is somewhere in that dark place. He looks a little like a politician who has that kind of goofy smile where your not sure if it’s sincere or not, which was just perfect for Dent.

Aaron Eckhart though is a fine choice still. If you watch Thank You for Smoking, it’s almost an extended audition for the part.

Back to Wolverine then, the film has the luxury of the lucrative first May weekend where the summer blockbusters officially start. Previously the film was set to have the weird Autumn release in 2008 but now this May opening will see Fox push the movie like they did X-Men 2 and Spider-Man 3 earlier this year, with the competition on the same weekend so far only coming from the Disney toon movie G-Force.

Of course Hugh Jackman stars in the lead role for of Logan for the fourth time in his career and having read the script I can tell you the majority of the film is a Wolverine vs. Victor Creed flick. Creed is so far uncast.

Gavin Hood whose latest movie Rendition is out this weekend will begin shooting the movie in Australia before moving to New Zealand and then New Orleans in November.

Hopefully the added breathing space before the movie is released and the recent Skip Woods re-write will have improved this draft considerably and with Fox pushing the movie as their 2009 May tentpole, they must seem pretty confident about the film’s success.

Trick ‘r Treat trailer

The word is the Halloween themed horror movie Trick ‘r Treat will still be released this October and not early next year as previously reported by Bloody Disgusting. Good news then, I mean it’s really hard to imagine this movie opening at any other time of the year.

I’ve been intrigued by Trick ‘r Treat ever since I first heard about it last November. Was it the title that caught my attention? It surely wasn’t the fact that Michael Dougherty was directing, as it’s his directorial debut. Was it the cast the movie put together which includes Brian Cox, Dylan Baker, Anna Paquin and Leslie Bibb? Maybe, I do like Baker and Cox.

Or is it simply because it’s an original horror movie THAT’S NOT A REMAKE and one that won’t take itself to seriously and is just looking to have a good old fashioned slasher killing time.

IESB have got the exclusive first look at the trailer for the movie, which you will have to CLICK HERE to see… as that site doesn’t like to share things with anyone. The trailer is way too clunky and looks like it’s not finished and been put together by a student at film school but still it’s got some interesting images and like I said… it isn’t taking itself too seriously.

Loving Dylan Baker in this. I think he’s such a great character actor and can play sinister very well indeed. Sensibly, you will be able to see this movie this October.

tricktreattease.jpgTrick r’ Treat is a horror movie set around Halloween… that is set to be released around Halloween. A simple and novel idea but one that is very welcomed… are you listening Mr. Zombie?

On the left is the first promotional item we have seen from the movie, an early teaser poster. Looks pretty sweet, has that kid got a pumpkin for a head?

From JoBlo

The movie interweaves several terrifying subplots, including a serial-killing school principal, a gang of pranking teens, and a guy obsessed with Halloween.

I believe the film follows the premise of the characters who break the holiday rules of Halloween, will suffer a gruesome death, but I could be wrong.

Brian Cox, Anna Paquin, Dylan Baker and Leslie Bibb star in the flick, to be directed by Michael Dougherty for his close pal Bryan Singer.

Brian Cox to be CGI in Wolverine movie?

stryker.jpgBrian Cox was on the Jonathan Ross show here in the U.K. last night where he claimed that his role in the Wolverine prequel is set to be CGI, in the same vein as Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart in the flashback scene in X-Men 3.

You remember it right, it was quite early on and was disturbingly creepy?

This is what Cox said on the show…

‘it’s set seventeen years ago, which is fine for Hugh Jackman as Wolverine doesn’t age but for me, I’m thinking they could what they did with Patrick and Ian for the start of the third one. I know my character is in it, they’ve asked me to be in it but that was a while ago now, it’s completely stalled so no start date as yet.’

It’s good news that Cox will be in the movie but I’m not sure how much I could stomach that “anti-aging” CGI for more than five minutes. It just didn’t look right on McKellan and Stewart and would be too distracting for a feature length running time.

Maybe casting someone younger might have been the best choice, which I understand would be a shame because Cox was superb as Stryker but the right choice of actor who could play off Hugh Jackman would have been fine.

Hope this movie stays on course and doesn’t stay “stalled” for too long.

Brian Cox signs up for Trick ‘r Treat

brian_cox.gifThe always great Brian Cox has signed on to star in the horror flick Trick ‘r Treat in what is to be Michael Dougherty’s directorial debut. The guy is most famous for co-writing the X-Men 2 and Superman Returns scripts for Bryan Singer, who is also on board to produce the horror flick through his Bad Hat Harry Productions.

Trick is set on Halloween, with those that break the holiday rules and step over the line suffering a painful and gruesome death (or so we imagine). X-Men 3’s Anna Paquin will also star along with Dylan Barker and Leslie Bibb.

The movie is set to hit cinema’s around Halloween time next year, and will hopefully mark the start of a return to good, ORIGINAL, horror flicks on our screen. Saw III, TCM: The Beginning, The Grudge 2………. How depressing.
