Fanboy talk has been rabid since the news that a Venom spin-off movie was entering the second round of script writing stages over at Sony, my impression from what I’ve heard people say and comment is around 35% are in favour of it, 65% against.

Those that are in favour seem desperate to see something new in this franchise having seen the Mary Jayne/Peter Parker/Harry Osbourne saga completely run it’s course in Spider-Man 3. I’m in favour of seeing that too, but I’m not sure a movie from the villains’ p.o.v is the way to go.

Not when there is a wealth of potential stories and interesting characters we haven’t seen in this universe just yet.

MTV spoke to Venom’s creator David Micheline who gave his two cents on the project…

“I think Venom could headline a good movie on his own, but it would be tricky and would depend in large part on the script…

…If Eddie’s still dead from “Spider-Man 3, the story and the success of the movie would depend almost entirely on the personality of the character who would combine with the symbiote: his motivations, his background, his methodology…his heart and soul.”

Sony are currently looking for writers after deciding Jacob Estes’ (Mean Creek) original script wasn’t quite to their liking. They have also hinted that Topher Grace would not reprise his role of Eddie Brock.

If Sony do go ahead with the movie, I would love to see another of real substance give this movie a go. A younger Ralph Fiennes would be awesome for it, someone who you could believe a David Cronenberg would cast. Someone who has a dark side but can also project incredible warmth and passion.
