Mark Cappuccio CRANKS it up to HIGH VOLTAGE!

If you’re like me and had never seen the first Crank film until about a week ago and was unaware of how completely mad the whole thing was with Jason Statham (Chev Chelios) having to keep pumping himself up with adrenaline, drugs and doing anything that would keep his heart beating to stop a poison from killing him in under 60 minutes and then at the end falling from a helicopter and seemingly dying, then you may have been surprised that a follow up was made.

This time around, in Crank: Hight Voltage we get a crazy pre-credits flashback to the first film and then we cut to him falling out of said helicopter and then being bundled into the back of a van by angry Chinese men who promptly cut out his heart, put in a mechanical one and plan to harvest his body for organs. Decidedly pissed off about this he wakes up and punches his way out of the room and then sets about for the next 90 minutes in finding his heart and getting even with the bad guys who did this to him. The catch this time is that the artificial heart can only stay powered up for short bursts at a time meaning Statham has to fire himself with electricity pretty often by any means necessary!

So if you like films that are completely over the fecking top and massively crazy and full of action sequences seemingly edited by an epileptic squirrel on crack then this is the film for you. We get Chev shagging his girlfriend at the L.A. race track in front of thousands of people to keep his heart going of course, to charging himself up from a cars battery and then running like a bullet to get to the next part of the script. Its mental stuff all round and has enough gun fights, offensive dialogue, racial stereotypes and even a severed head in a box that defies all sci-fi conventions let alone real life but it made me laugh out loud and not once did my attention wander away from the electrifying action on screen.

Statham is a good as ever but is honestly far better in the role of the Transporter than old Chev, Amy Smart is back as his girlfriend and is as cute and mad as ever. Old characters like Chev’s genius like doctor are back also along with his Mexican friend who died in the first film and now returns as his own twin brother but will full bodied tourettes which is a hilarious (NOT). So see this if you’re a fan of wondrous drivel and you will not be disappointed at all.

In terms of sheer entertainment value, this is the best film I’ve seen this year. We were just laughing throughout. Great stuff.

Highlight for me? Chev shouting ‘cunt’ as he runs pass a guy he just shot. Classic.
