Yet More JLA/Superman Rumours!

supermanlogoFor a long time I’ve wanted a hover board. To me it’s simply the coolest thing I’ve ever seen in a film. Scratch that, now top of my wanted list for sci-fi movie gadgets is the hyper-sleep pod thing from Alien. Just put me in it and wake me up when all these Superman rumours are over!

The latest info comes from Film Ick, and it’s to do with Bryan Singer’s plans for Superman: The Man of Steel. Supposedly Singer and writer Michael Dougherty have pitched Warner Bros their take complete with a first draft script and concept art:

There’s a new Kryptonian character coming to Earth as a result of Supes’ pilrgimage to Krypton that took place before Returns.

Lex makes a deal with “a new villain” (I read this as new to the films, not new to the mythos, and indeed I have some idea who it is…) in order to have Superman eradicated. This villain double crosses Lex and takes over Lexcorp (yep – sounds like Brainiac to me too). What’s more, Jason is a key part in the plot to trap Superman and…

The rest of the info I’ve left out as if true it’s rather spoilerific, but follow the Film Ick link to read the rest.

Personally I don’t think Singer’s sequel will ever see the light of day. The fact that the studio even commissioned a JLA script in the first place is a slap in the face to Superman Returns. “Yeah, we like your movie so much, Bryan, that we’re thinking of doing something completely different with Superman next”. Hardly a vote of confidence, is it?

All the “buzz” points to JLA making it out of the gate first, and with Singer working on Valkyrie, there’s no way he’ll be able to get his Superman movie in before the strike.

“The fact that the studio even commissioned a JLA script in the first place is a slap in the face to Superman Returns”

I sure hope so, Superman Returns was a slap in the face to Sueprman fans everywhere.

“‘Yeah, we like your movie so much, Bryan, that we’re thinking of doing something completely different with Superman next’”
I can’t really imagine any director not getting Superman as much as Singer didn’t. Bring on the JLA movie. This would send a potent message to primidonna directors everywhere -you can’t coast off of past successes. You’re not God’s gift to cinema, and if you utterly screw up a franchsie by trying to remake it in your dumbass image then you will be replaced! And how cool would it be for a new creative team to come in and get Superman right? What would Singer say then?
We still don’t know squat about the JLA movie, other than that it’s been proposed, but since it’s guaranteed WB is going to make it I’m hoping they get it right. Sure beats the alternative –which is to hope that it sucks, now who would want to do that?
And for my part this film can redefine the team superhero movie (and give the correct take on a lot of beloved characters at the same time) the same way X-Men redefined the superhero movie.

Now, let the JLA-hate commence.

I think it’s funny that you ignore stuff like this from the report:

“Apparently, Singer and Mike Dougherty have crafted a killer pitch and ‘concept draft’ that had the suits eating out of their hands and even had a knock-on effect for the plans for JLA (I’m told).”

and…

“So, there’s a basic draft of the script (a scriptment?), pre-production art and several sequences storyboarded and, as far as I’ve been told, it’s all going down very well with the execs. Nothing’s gonna stand in the way of this film, I’m sure.”

So, if you believe this rumor, why leave that out?

Also, is the fact that a JL-script got “commissioned” (actually, WRONG — it was a spec script) a slap in the face to Nolan and Bale’s Batman?

“in order to have Superman eradicated.”

as much as I’d love to see Brainiac in a Superman film, if we go with comics mythology, Brainiac is not of Kryptonian origin.
The word choice there may not be accidental, The Eradicator may be the villain (no relation to the Kids in the Hall masked racquetball player).A 20,000 year old Kryptonian weapon that tries to transform the Earth into Krypton, and preserve all things Kryptonian in the universe… later on his story gets much more convoluted and intertwined with the death of superman mess of the 90s.

Scramble, I never said I believe this rumour – I posted it because it was making the rounds. I’ve also read from the IESB webmaster that WB didn’t like Singer’s pitch at all and he’s having to rethink it. Who knows what to believe, but if you read the LA Times piece on the strike it’s all about JLA going for 09 and no mention of MoS going ahead.

JLA was not a spec script. Variety posted this when it was announced: “Warner Bros., with its major appetite for fresh franchises, is looking to make a feature based on super team the Justice League of America, HIRING writing duo Kiernan and Michele Mulroney to pen the script.”

It is a slap in the face to Nolan/Bale, but more so to Singer. Nolan is already shooting his second Bat-movie so they gave him a second shot, but the studio broke the bank for Singer and his movie didn’t make the money they were hoping for.

I’m sick of people defending Superman Returns.

The movie has made $391 million worldwide at the time of writing but it was budegeted at around $270 million.

Warner Brothers spent an awful lot of time and effort to get the film off the ground and it’s needed every bit of DVD sale and merchandise money to make any movie of worth to Warner Brothers.

The movie was over-priced and showed nothing for it.

“I’m sick of people defending Superman Returns.” Bless you Matt! Preach it, my brother, preach!

“The movie was over-priced and showed nothing for it.”

Amen to that! I love a good superhero romp as much as the next geek, but I won’t make excuses for work that I know could have been done better. I certainly won’t use the old “well, it made money” excuse to defend a movie that was clearly garbage.
