Dismissing the U.S. film market and branding it “barren”, the veteran American scribe of TAXI DRIVER and RAGING BULL is moving out to Mumbai to shoot a movie in Bollywood.

The Hollywood Reporter say Paul Schrader will write and direct the action movie EXTREME CITY, a cross-cultural tale that follows an American man who travels to India to help resolve a kidnapping case for his father-in-law, only to get caught up in a gangster plot.

The movie will likely mix between English and Hindi languages.

“I’ve been getting indie movies made for 20 years,” he said. “But I take a good look around and what I see is a barren, barren place — in terms of the financial community, in terms of audiences, in terms of distribution. It’s cold out there.”

The movie will be produced by noted Indian director Anubhav Sinha and Schrader is attempting to get a big Bollywood studio involved. There has already been some interest from top Bollywood actors.

After the critical success of the cross-cultural SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, a love story set in India and directed by British helmer Danny Boyle, Schrader was obviously inspired to take the leap and try something different now that there is an audience for it.

He is the first major U.S. writer/director to go over and make a movie in Bollywood and with a title like EXTREME CITY, something tells me the writer of some of Scorsese’s best is out to shake things up.
