Sure, Jaden Christopher Syre Smith was fine in THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS but come on. He’s 9 years old. Your not seriously going to make him the new KARATE KID are you?
IGN have heard from a reliable source that Sony Pictures are looking to remake or even restart a KARATE KID franchise which will be produced by Will Smith’s Overbook Entertainment. Jerry Weintraub, the producer who brought us the pretty fun 1984 original film is also on board, as he has been for every KARATE KID sequel that original spawned.
The producers are said to be looking for writers.
IGN have been trying to contact Smith’s offices to get a confirmation on this, but for now it’s just a rumor.
Weird story this one. The only thing I can think of is that they are going to sit on this project for 4-5 years and make it touch on themes of racism.
I remember watching this a ton of times on VHS. Big spoilers if you haven’t seen the film in this video below. I always thought this ending was a rip-off of a 70’s flick with a certain Stallone…

Forget remaking The Karate Kid. Use young Jaden to launch a juicy new kung-fu franchise. I’m thinking Black Belt Smith (absolutely not inspired by Jim Kelly’s timeless blaxploitation martial arts masterpiece, Black Belt Jones). His dad could pop up in a cameo role as the dojo grandmaster.
Jaden as the Karate Kid??? Who’s gonna play Mr. Miyagi…Cedric the Entertainer?
