Warners Bros vs. Women – Round 2

This story has gone way, way further than I thought it ever would. If you aren’t familiar with any of this then check out my initial article and Matt’s follow up.

Finke’s article has such legs that it’s provoked a response from Jeff Robinov, who tells Variety’s Anne Thompson that he is still moving forward on several actress driven project.

He cites JUSTICE LEAGUE and WATCHMEN as two examples of tentpole pictures with prominent roles for women.

Robinov also states he is still willing to put a femme star into an action movie.

“But, like any other movie, it has to be the right movie with the right actor and the right filmmaker at the right time.”

This is smart damage control on Warners’ part. I almost expect a slew of chick flicks to compensate for his alleged comments! However I think mentioning WATCHMEN (where Silk Spectre is third or fourth billed at best) and JUSTICE LEAGUE (where Wondy is the token female amongst the boys) doesn’t help his case.

When Jessica Biel passed on JUSTICE LEAGUE it was thought part of the reason was because the studio wouldn’t guarantee her the star vehicle she was really after – a solo WONDER WOMAN film. Incidentally, that period Wonder Woman spec script the studio bought was really great (imagine RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK meets SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE) and I don’t know why they don’t just make that.

We shall have to wait and see what happens with this story, it’s be nice to put it to rest but I expect Nikki Finke to strike back at some point.
