VENOM spin-off movie?

Just when you thought Marvel could do no wrong.

IESB are reporting the unexpected rumor that Marvel executives are pushing through with a Venom stand-alone movie with discussions already underway with A-List writers for what could be one of the Marvel’s tentpole releases of 2010. The proposed movie will not effect SPIDER-MAN 4 in anyway as Marvel own the rights to the Venom character and not Sony, who Marvel let the studio use in the last Spider-Man movie.

If it is true, it leaves Marvel able to use the Venom character however they like… except they can’t use the character of Spider-Man. So you could put Venom against or in conjuction with other Spidey villains and other heroes like Hulk or Iron Man for example but not Spider-Man, though the site is pretty clear that the big monster is getting his own film, probably a Jekyll and Hyde affair.

Once they find a writer, they are good to go on developing this thing because of the interim deal between Marvel and the WGA. No word if they are going to go after Topher Grace to play the character, my guess would be not.

Sounds so out there, it can’t be true right? What about the Marvel characters like Captain America or Black Panther?

I would rather see a dozen characters on screen than Venom getting his own movie. He was the worst frikkin’ part of the whole Spider-Man universe on screen and was made out into being such a boring villain. I’m rather baffled by this… thoughts?

Which potential film of the next five years, has the best chance of beating The Dark Knight's 3 day opening weekend record?

  1. I’d be willing to give this a chance, being a huge Venom fan. I only hope it won’t be Topher Grace playing him again, because that was dreadful.

  2. matt, the only reason venom seemed such a boring villain on screen is because sam raimi wanted it to be that way! If Sam Raimi had liked venom and at least respected his venom fans, he would’ve thrown out the sandman character altogether(HAA AND YOU SAY VENOM WAS THE MOST BORING CHARACTER) and focused on a good plot for venom. He basically reduced venom to a boring side villain JUST BECAUSE of sam raimi’s biased view.
anyways, staying on topic…a separate venom movie would be good for the fans who felt cheated. But, in the end, making a movie just about him is sorta lame, especially without spiderman to battle against.
Even though Venom is one of my favorite villains in the spiderman comics, there are other villains out there that probably have better stories. It could even go down the road that “The Fly” had…scientist is on the verge on an amazing breakthrough..and then BAM! experiment gone wrong, we watch him transform into a monster/villain and we see how that affects the environment. I just don’t know who it could work with, and what hero character could be pitted against him.

  3. i disagree with you whole heartedly. i felt that topher was spiderman 3’s saving grace. the only thing wrong with the third was that it was too plot heavy. and for the two movies that raimi gave us, i think it’s pretty pretentious to write off the last film and trash it like third graders.

venom deserves his own film just as much as any other marvel hero or villain. his story is just as rich and complex, if not darker than spiderman. and frankly, i wanted to see more of venom in the last film. to say that venom is boring i think is WAY off base- it happens to be his most dangerous enemy; in the comics spidey had to fake his own damn death to keep venom from hunting him. compared to the rest of the spidey villain world, everyone else looks like ponces next to venom.

    shame on you.

  4. Matt,

That makes it now twice you and I have had an argument where your intuition is off. First the Indy 4 pic and now this. My guess is that your only impression of Venom comes from the idiotic Spiderman 4 and not from the comics.
The Venom from the comics is much more interesting and threatening all together. So put the Venom from Spidey 4 out of your mind. In fact, I pretty much assume that Marvel is also mad how Raimi mishandled the Venom property (just like the original Hulk was mishandled), and going forth with a movie that hopefully will be a thousand times more entertaining.

  5. ALK,

So your agreeing that Venom was a boring villain?

Yeah I was one of those hoping Venom would be in Spider-Man 3 during those early days of rumor but my God, he totally sucked in that movie.

Raimi fucked him up completely, I agree. I hated what he did with him but honestly, have you ever read a Spider-Man comic and thought “Hey this Venom dude, should get his OWN movie”?

    No way!

He is a poor character for this medium. His social skills as a character are non-existent.

Give me THE WOLF MAN for my Jekyyl/Hyde film.

And Sam Raimi didn’t want the character there. He was FORCED to use him by Ari Arad’s bias p.o.v. because the guy couldn’t wait to put him in there.

Wouldn’t it have been more suitable for Arad to let Raimi finish the third film and when someone else comes aboard the fourth flick, let them handle the character in a proper manner?

And at the end of the day, Venom without Spidey is boring.

  6. dirtylungs,

Topher Grace was a whiney villain in the last Spidey movie.

I wasn’t trashing the franchise, I was trashing Raimi’s vision. He is bored with the Spider-Man character now.

Green Goblin is Spidey’s big nemesis, or Kraven the Hunter. Far more interesting tales.

  7. Lee,

That INDY IV picture is photoshopped, I’m telling ya.

You mentioned Spider-Man 3 as Spider-Man 4… TWICE! Come on dude, think about what your writing!

No… I’ve read Venom comics. They were cool… but I don’t wanna see him as a lead character. Same goes with The Joker.

    And your last comment…

In fact, I pretty much assume that Marvel is also mad how Raimi mishandled the Venom property (just like the original Hulk was mishandled), and going forth with a movie that hopefully will be a thousand times more entertaining.

    I AGREE 100%!

  8. All right Matt,

You got me on the Spidey 4 thing. Apparently the morning hasn’t slapped the sleep from me yet.
A Venom movie could work if they write the script correctly. That is always my theory with most movies.

Oh yeah, and you’re still wrong on the Indy 4 pic.

  9. Alright here goes nothing…
I am a ridiculously large Venom nerd and was anticipating Spider-Man 3 for just that reason. Sadly though, Raimi wanted/wants nothing to do with any of the newer villains in the Marvel universe. he would rather see enemies like the Sandman, Dr. Octopus, Electro, the Scropion, etc., all the old villains that HE grew up with.
The main problem is that hes not thinking about what the fans want. Honestly, who seen the first two Spider-Man movies and said “Gee, I can’t wait to see the Sandman!”
    No one.
Out of all the villains, Venom is probably the most sadistic, yet intelligent. How many other villains knew Spider-Man’s identity and toyed with his family?

  13. People plz venom,venom,venom! Doesn’t anyone care about… “CARNAGE”?

Carnage was the most sedistic spiderman villain so shouldn’t and surely you guys remember Venom a envy of Carnage. Eddie Brock (photograper)+ Symbiote = Anti-hero but Cletus Kassady (murderer+convict+psycho) + Symbiote = Carnage (more powerful than Venom). Rest my case.

In comics Carnage was too powerful for spiderman so he needed venom (tragic). Hence a side Venom movie is worth the vote.

Don’t put down Venom movie unless you know say something about Carnage.
