21 looks to be the film that OCEAN’S ELEVEN would be if it was played serious. And that might not be a bad thing at all.
The movie stars Jim Sturgess as a mathematical genius who is convinced by his fellow students and teacher that he could take down Vegas casino’s and win millions by putting his skills towards card counting.
What makes this so much more interesting than your run of the mill casino thriller is that this tale is actually based on a true story and is chronicled in the book BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE…

The trailer has done it’s job for me. I not only wanna see the movie but I am actually interested in now reading the book too.
Spacey looks fine, Sturgess looks to be a real interesting actor (you might have seen him in ACROSS THE UNIVERSE). That dude from DISTURBIA looks hilariously funny again and finally Kate Bosworth is playing a character who more closely suits her age.
21 comes out in the Spring from director Robert Luketic. He brought us MONSTER-IN-LAW, BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE and LEGALLY BLONDE but let’s not hold that against him shall we?

I’ve heard about this project before. Can’t get excited. The story behind this (if this is the one I’m thinking about) is about a bunch of MIT students who claimed to have taken the casinos for millions by developing some new, extraordinary “method” based on mathematics.
Uh, yeah, it’s called “counting.” Nothing new or extraordinary about it.
What they did was nothing more than a variation on the card-counting scheme. Instead of using one person they used two. One to count, then, when the counter gives the signal, another person at another table would sally over and make the big bet. There have been all sorts of people who have discredited the authors and even refuted their claims of how much they scammed from the casinos. In fact a couple of the guys involves have been among those disputing what may or may not have happened.
After the Ocean’s series I really don’t have the patience for yet another card game flick, and I think no one else does either. A scam, some smarmy college kids, romance, thuggish characters who catch on –who the hell cares?
Unless this thing’s outrageously smart (which nothing I’ve read about the book, nor read about this movie or these guys has convinced me there is) I wouldn’t even see it on DVD. To me these guys are making money off a scam all right, but the scam is to get a book deal then parlay that into a movie one. I may not know a blockbuster when I see one, but I know a stinker when I do. I’m not falling for this con.
Man, they are not getting the tone of the book at all (it’s almost Fight Club with card counters). In fact this looks terrible.
Unfortunately it seems like they’re going for Hollywood fluff with the film version, which is a shame becuase it could’ve been a lot more.
