Are we seeing a new mode of film distribution in the making? I’ve certainly never seen anything quite like it…
Cinema-goers are invited to attend a live link-up event on Wednesday 16th September, via satellite, with audiences nationwide to see comedian RUSSELL HOWARD perform an exclusive stand up introduction to a very special preview screening of bizarre comedy/documentary THREE MILES NORTH OF MOLKOM. The film follows the two-week, comic-come-karmic adventures of a “Sharing Group” who meet at the slightly bonkers No Mind new age festival held at Angsbacka in the heart of the Swedish countryside, three miles north of a town called Molkom. A 21st century playground for spiritually minded adults. (We’ll have a full review up soon).
It seems to me that films are getting ever-more elaborate in their attempts to publicise themselves, but drafting in a comedian to present a national satellite broadcast (supposedly emphasising the green credentials of the film by avoiding transport etc) is a big jump – especially for a small indie pic like Molkom.
“Providing a unique experience for lovers of film and comedy everywhere, the satellite link up will be broadcast in cinemas across Britain on the Wednesday evening, with new stand-up material specially created for the event. The host cinema from which the event will be broadcast live will be the Cineworld Haymarket.”
Alex Stolz, Senior Distribution and Exhibition Executive for the UK Film Council, whose Distribution & Exhibition Fund is co-funding the event, says:
“The use of a live satellite link-up shows how new and innovative ways of distribution are giving cinemas the flexibility to show films as live event and our funding For Three Miles North of Molkom will ensure the film is beamed into 50 cinemas across the UK. Exploring cost-effective ways of making films more widely accessible is an important part of the UK Film Council’s work in supporting digital innovation in film.”
