Exciting news on a sequel which I had previously I had no desire to see.
The sequel to the 1999 hit movie The Thomas Crown Affair which will see the return of Pierce Brosnan and depending on scheduling Angelina Jolie, has found a director.
PAUL VERHOEVEN
The geek favourite who brought us Robocop, Basic Instinct, Total Recall and Starship Troopers before going a little mad and directing Hollow Man in 2000.
After a break of six years, Verhoeven gave us Black Book, not only THE best film of his career but also one of the most exciting, shocking and engaging thrillers of the year.
This will be the first time Verhoeven has ever directed a sequel in Hollywood, although ironically it isn’t to one of his films.
The movie is pre-strike and is titled The Topaki Affair… blending both elements of Eric Ambler’s original novel and a 1954 classic MGM movie titled Topkapi which was based on the same material.
I still think it would make a whole lot more sense if they called the film The Thomas Crown XXX, because that’s the most memorable thing about the original movie’s title and will let everyone know instantly that it’s a sequel. The Topkapi Affair certainly doesn’t imediately strike you as the same but well I’m not the expert in film marketing.
Fingers crossed Angelina does end up in this. Can’t wait to see how Verhoeven (one of the masters of shooting sexy ladies) will film her.
They really couldn’t have chosen a better director for this material!

In other words…let’s hope Verhoeven can convince Angelina to get her Tits out, and none of this Animated crap either!
Well, this movie’s already FUBAR. John McTiernan made the original and frankly is the only guy I can think of to do a proper follow-up, plus I’d LOVE to see what he could do directing Angelina Jolie.
Damn shame about that whole federal conviction thing. The studios will treat him like he’s radioactive for years before they throw him another huge project. And we’ll be stuck seeing no-talent second-stringers like Piof, McG and Dominic Sena attempt to fool us into thinking tricky camera-movies are somehow a credible substitute for storytelling ability.
Sad days these are indeed!
Verhoeven made a damn good movie with Black Book and if Jolie is involved it may be a memorable sequel. Sad for McTiernan he made a mistake and will probably pay for it, such is life.
McTiernan is the only director for the Thomas Crown Affair? JaySmack you are prone to hyperbole, but this is silly. I’m as huge a fan of Die Hard, Predator, and Hunt for Red October as anyone, but I also suffered through Last Action Hero, Basic, 13th Warrior, and Rollerball. How ironic is it that McTiernan resides simultaneously in director’s jail and actual prison?
And Paul Verhoeven is supposedly attached to this? What, did he lose a bet? The original Thomas Crown came out in 1999, it grossed 69 million while Brosnan was at the height of his Bond fame. It doesn’t make sense to think 8 years and zero non-James-Bond-Hits later a 55 year old Brosnan is going to make a high grossing sequel. Avoiding doomed shitty sequels is part of the reason Verhoeven left America in the first place. Mark my words, there is no way Angelina Jolie signs on for this movie. It’s simply not going to happen. Wow Hollywood how original, let’s take an old James Bond and couple him with a young, nubile leading lady. I have a suggestion for a title: Entrapment 2.
MDOC: No, it’s silly to cast stones at Pierce Brosnan and dog out McTiernan’s resume. He’s made a lot more hits than Verhoven. And he is the only one who can make the follow-up to the original TCA. That’s not “hyperbole,” that simple fact.
More than likely this film will never get made, which is no loss to my world, I wasn’t exactly a fan of the original. It was good for one-viewing only IMHO.
Oh, and I happen to have liked Basic BTW.
