Last week’s taking of just over $10 million for Grindhouse, wasn’t really a flop and was more like a failure… along the same lines as Snakes on a Plane. This time, the movie really has bombed, big time!!
Grindhouse has dropped 65% in takings for only it’s second week, and in reality the movie must have been playing to empty theatres. This wasn’t an Easter Weekend, so they can’t blame it on that… although I will say that the huge amount of wide releases won’t have helped. You can’t really blame anyone if they cut the movie in two and release it as one now, as it’s got to be damage control from here on in.
Disturbia is one of the surprise #1 hits of the year. The blatant Rear Window rip-off took in an impressive $23 million on it’s opening weekend and showed that straight forward looking movies will win the day over creative risks.
It’s got to be good news for Transformers that Shia LaBeouf has managed to lead a movie to #1 because he is the biggest star we will see for the young cast involved in the epic blockbuster.
The second highest new entry had a much bigger name cast than Disturbia but only managed fourth place. Bruce Willis, Halle Berry and Giovanni Ribisi all starred in the thriller Perfect Stranger which didn’t have the greatest trailer in the world and only managed to muster a fairly respectable $11 million.
Elsewhere, Blades of Glory continues to make a nice profit for Dreamworks. The movie has now grossed over $90 million in three weeks and Disney’s Meet the Robinsons is doing good but not world beating numbers… now amassing $72 million after the same number of weeks.
Pathfinder opened on a relatively small release and a quiet $4.8 million.
