There’s a Monaghan in WOLVERINE after all!

But it’s not going to be Michelle Monaghan who was offered the part of Silver Fox but had to turn it down when the schedule on the D.J. Caruso thriller EAGLE EYE started to over-run. We heard on Saturday that part was eventually won by unknown actress Lynn Collins.

But we shall still see a Monaghan in the credits sequence of the film. 31 year old Scottish actor best known for his parts in THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and on the hit t.v. show Lost, will fill the role of Blackwing, a B-character from the Marvel universe. Maybe they should start calling this movie WOLVERINE AND FRIENDS…

Blackwing, originally known as Beak - is a Dutch born hero whose body changed when he hit puberty into that of a humanoid-bired like form - with a beak, talons for hands and the ability to fly. He shares a similar skeletal figure as of Angel (who Ben Foster played for about 5 mins in X-MEN 3) and much like the rest of the X-MEN, he ran away from home because he was disgusted and ashamed of his appearance.

The character was created by Grant Morrison and first appeared in New X-Men #117.

The movie will be Monaghan’s third venture into a fan favourite universe and it could prove to be a profitable deal for him if the character lives and stays on for sequels.

Just like X-MEN 3, this new prequel is getting packed full of characters. Just yesterday the hideously named Black Eyed Pea’s star will.i.am was cast in the role of Kestrel, marking one of those rare moments in the history of OWF where I was absolutely speechless - and I couldn’t bring myself to talk about it. What a shocking casting decision.

So we have Deadpool, Kestrel, Blackwing, The Blob, Gambit along with the main players of Wolverine, Stryker, Silver Fox and Sabertooth. So much for our hope of a more realisitic, down to earth and tight WOLVERINE thriller.

  1. The first few times we heard these side characters would be in the film was cool. “Hey, fans are getting the insider nod! Yay!” But now it’s just too much. It’s starting to detract from my anticipation for the movie. It’s beginning to seem like a bloated unwieldy cameo fest. I want a movie not a lineup poster.

  2. I like Monaghan and he’s a good actor so it’s good to see him getting any kind of interesting role. The presence of a Black Eyed Pea brings the film’s prospects back into balance though. Crazy casting…

  3. Will-I-Am is bad casting. The rest is just pure sh*t. This movie will be the flip side of the same disaster coin that JLA was going to be.

Too many miscast, crappy characters as opposed to too many miscast, crappy actors.

  4. If they were gonna have so many cameos in this movie i’d rather have seen some of the actual X-men in this in stead of loads of dodgy characters, it would have been much better to have done this film in the present and feature dudes like Cyclops and give him something decent to do in intead of standing around in the background whinging all the time like he did in the last three movies, no character development whatsoever.
It would have been cool to see more of Bobby Drake as well.
Whats the point in putting Gambit in there just for the sake of it?
we all no that he’ll probably have no character in this as let’s face it these movies are all about Wolverine and Hugh Jackman’s big arms and pec’s!!
    Nuff said!

  5. This is pretty absurd. X3 was decent considering the fact the studio was going through a lot to find a director to film the bloody thing in such a short amount of time. Nonetheless they put into too many characters that deserved more screen time in order to really appreciate them. As for the “Origins” film BEAK and GAMBIT should NOT be in the film whatsoever! It would make more sense to perhaps briefly introduce Gambit for the Magneto Origins flick and not even then! As for Deadpool and Wraith they make sense, but not GAMBIT!

If they were to introduce, or bring back, any characters for this flick it should be Lady Deathstrike (bring back Kelly Hu) and Omega Red. If you are familiar with the history of Wolverine this makes sense. I’m sorry, but Gambit is a huge mistake to have this movie.
Basically the franchise needs to start all over. Singer really screwed up by leaving X-MEN for Superman! He had something great going and let it go down the drain. Superman Returns was not all that great. It should have been considering all of the resources he took from his X-experience.

All in all this film sounded better when the public was left in the dark about the casting.
