UPDATE:
It was a pretty wild rumor but fun to think about never-the-less. I would still say Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium, Aeon Flux) is still favourite for this but I wouldn’t be surprised if Len Wiseman found himself with the project sooner rather than later.
Here is the expected studio denial from Collider…
…whatever Konami’s Aki Saito meant to say is irrelevant, as I’ve emailed someone involved with the upcoming movie and they said the rumor about Paul Thomas Anderson is “completely false and ridiculous.”
END OF UPDATE
Well if it wasn’t for the direct quote I wouldn’t believe it myself but here’s the mega bizarre rumor that is just so ridiculous ya know, it might just turn out to be true.
At a press launch for the new Metal Gear Solid video game for the Playstation 3, Kokatu reporter Brian Ashcroft got to talk with Konami’s Aki Saito who said the much talked about movie adaptation of the popular game was still very much in the negotiations period BUT he also said that PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON was interested in directing.
You don’t think it’s possible he has got PTA (THERE WILL BE BLOOD, MAGNOLIA, BOOGIE NIGHTS) mixed up with Paul W.S. Anderson (MORTAL KOMBAT, RESIDENT EVIL, ALIENS VS. PREDATOR) do you?
Is PTA - one of the finest storytellers we have in the business actually interested in making a big studio blockbuster movie?
Man, that is a pretty big coup if true. The last we heard Colombia were aggressively going after Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrum) to helm but man PTA - that’s on another level entirely.
Surely he meant W.S?
Man, what a juicy rumor to try and digest this Tuesday morning!

Even so, would that be a bad thing if PTA was considering it? I mean, it certainly beats PWSA and Uwe Boll for directors….
would you rather not have PTA, and just get another run-of-the mill action director for it. I don’t know much about the Metal Gear games, but ive found theres loads of devout fans who want a well done movie.
thoughts?

Fuck yeah. I don’t particularly know much about the game either but a studio thriller from PTA sounds as awesome as when Chris Nolan took up the Batman reigns.

*a bit random*
There were unconfirmed rumors circulated back in Sep 12 2007 that Christian BALE was being wooed to play SOLID SNAKE in a planned big screen adaptation of MG:S.
If Kurt Wimmer and Bale sign on to do this, I smell body count overload.

Only one guy can play Snake –Nick Chinlund. Since Wimmer cast him in Ultraviolet I can only hope common sense, prior good experience and just good casting sense prevails and Kurt does the smart thing by casting Chinlund.
