THE STRANGERS sequel confirmed

Despite this looking like the latest entry in the “home invasion/torture porn genre”, Bryan Bertino’s debut film The Strangers surprisingly received some half decent reviews, including one from our very own OWF writer Ray DeRousse who even gave the film 3 stars.

By all accounts, it was a watchable, original and entertaining horror film. And it just so happened to make $52 million domestic, on a poultry $9 million budget… and during the summer movie season no less.

After much speculation, Rogue Pictures have officially greenlit a sequel to the film today which will reunite Liv Tyler with several of the villains from the original flick according to Variety. Rogue Pictures believe they have stumbled across “the next Saw franchise” and you know they will milk it as far as they can.

Production will begin in the first week of 2009, though it’s unknown whether Bertino will return. He is currently scripting two other horror’s at Rogue.

The movie is finally released in the U.K. on Friday and you can read Ray’s original review of the film from May HERE.

  1. The trailers for The Strangers actually kinda make me want to see it… which is rather unusual given I’m not a fan of the genre in the slightest.

Not entirely convinced it needs a sequel though? Not that I know how they leave it at the end of the first, but still - it does seem like more of a one-off project than a series.

  2. How is this movie at all original when it’s basically a cheap rip-off of the French film “Them”??? It might as well have been a remake. Nothing original about it….

  3. I’m having a hard time seeing a sequel to this. I saw the movie and liked it enough but I really don’t think a sequel is necessary. Sometimes they just need to let things end.
