The Science of Stop Motion Animation

Michel GondryMichel Gondry’s films are always fascinating, if a bit weird and not always for everyone. I can appreciate what the visionary director was trying to do with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep but they are both films that I can’t honestly say I enjoyed.

A little light on story both them but full of mood and gimmicks.

I love the look of Be Kind, Rewind though. A genius idea for a film it’s the type of thing I can see myself watching over and over again.

So what next for Gondry?

Well MTV Movies Blog have an interview with the guy where he tells us his next project will be a stop-motion animated feature, that he is currently working on with his son. He’s dabbled with stop motion before, in some sequences on The Science of Sleep but this will be the first time he will have directed a full feature with it…

“I am working on an animated film with my son,” Gondry revealed to MTV News. “It’s going to be quite amazing.”

“We’re translating our relationship into a futuristic story with a dictator and a rebel,” he explained of the film’s rudimentary outline. “He’s the dictator in the story [and] it will be based on [his] art.”

Interesting, though I very much doubt this will be anything like a Wallace and Gromit movie or a Ray Harryhausen picture.

Gondry has a mind completely of his own.

Sounds cool, and Gondry’s crazed creative visions are always a joy to see. Then again, when directors decide to work with their children things can go a bit iffy. Remember Robert Rodriguez being inspired by his kid to do The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D?
