Olivier Hirschbiegel’s remake of the 1956 classic sci-fi movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers, now has the fixed release date of August 17th (Sept 28th U.K.) after it’s many delays and re-shoots.
Of course we say it’s Hirschbiegel’s movie but The Invasion has endured re-shoots from both The Wachowski Brothers and their protege James McTeigue in an attempt to make it more of a “summer blockbuster” disaster movie instead of an “art flick”.
Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Jeffrey Wright and Jeremy Northam star in the movie which was made on a budget of $50 million but has probably inflated somewhat since then with all the re-shoots they have gone through.
A new poster for the movie is on your left. It’s certainly eye catching and I would say darn effective. It’s way better than just headshots of Kidman and Craig just plastered together. This poster has the feel of those early Children of Men posters, which is certainly not a bad thing at all.
The question over a director’s vision vs. the studio’s money is one that we will never get an answer over who is right. On the one hand, the studio has given their money and hired a director to do the job of making the movie they think they can make a return on, whilst the director has his own vision and artistic integrity that he wishes to keep.
Thankfully, with the advent of DVD we should get chance of seeing both versions of the sci-fi movie eventually.
