BOX OFFICE: THE GAME PLAN worked. $22 million, first place opening!

The Game PlanSo, Walt Disney almost remade their 2005 hit movie THE PACIFIER, changing only the lead star VIN DIESEL with THE ROCK and the results are another surprising first place place hit. The movie took home a much better than expected $22.7 million, which could end up being a $100 million hit by the end of it’s run if it has the same kinda legs as the VIN DIESEL flick had two years ago.

In second place was the first of many ‘war on terror’ films we are to be bombarded with between now and the end of the year, THE KINGDOM. I actually saw this movie yesterday in a packed morning showing and I thought it was really terrific. Expect a review soon. The Jamie Foxx/Jennifer Garner/Chris Cooper/Jason Bateman movie made $17.7 million.

In third was last week’s number one, RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION which dropped a big 66%, with a soft $8 million in it’s second week.

3:10 TO YUMA is proving to be holding over well with a 32% drop which see’s it at fifth place, with a total domestic gross of nearly $44 million on a $55 million budget. As well as the movie has done, I still don’t see it reaching the $58 million domestic that OPEN RANGE managed four years ago, which the talent of Mangold/Bale/Crowe must have surely seen as a marker they should have passed.

  1. Not that it will do very well over here, but why on earth is Game Plan not released until the end of MARCH in the uk?

  2. I’m glad the Rock’s had a movie that debuted at number one and all, but I sure hope he doesn’t go the kiddy-flick route. Let this be a detour on his way to Spy Hunter.
