It’s over 6 months since we reported that the Coen Brothers next movie would see them producing a re-make of the 1969 classic True Grit.

Today, Variety announce that Jeff Bridges – who starred as The Dude in the Coen Brothers’ The Big Lebowski back in 1998 – is lined up to take on the role that won John Wayne an oscar.

Simon Gallagher certainly made his feeling’s clear on the idea of the Coen’s reimagining such an iconic Western back in March. But surely we can have faith in the Coen Brothers’ to do the movie justice?

In it, a 14 year old girl tags along with an aging U.S. marshal and another lawman to track the outlaw who killed her father. The trail leads them into hostile Indian territory. The original told the story from Cogburn’s vantage point, but the new version will work from the viewpoint of the young girl. Kim Darby played the young girl in the original, and Glen Campbell played the other lawman.

The Coen Brothers are currently at the Toronto Film Festival for the premiere of their latest movie A Serious Man.

Simon Gallagher needs to grow a pair.

Coen Brothers will make their own movie, and at least we know it won’t be a redundant retread of the original. If it’s good, then brilliant, if it’s not, gutted, I’ll watch the original instead. Either way, it’s not like the original is going anywhere.

I’ll never understand why so called “film fans” get in such flaps about remakes.

I dislike remakes because I’d rather see the money spent on creating something original, on encouraging new ideas and new talent, rather than recycling old ideas which, more often than not, are just spun out to make the studios some cash.

It’s not your money, and it’s gonna happen whether you like it or not.

The prospect of two of the most creative people in Hollywood reimagining a classic should be exciting more than anything else.

If this helps in the resurgence of the “Western” i’m all for it
