The Terminator is back.
The Halycon Co. have purchased the rights to the franchise and they now intend to make a brand new trilogy, the first of which will be released in the first half of 2009. There will be no James Cameron involved which we all knew anyway, and certainly no Arnold Schwarzenegger. This is a brand new trilogy, that will focus on John Connor in his 30’s as part of a very depleted human race who must stand up against the machines.
The next installment, Terminator 4 will be based on a script written by John D. Brancato and Michael Ferris who collaborated together on Terminator 3 and also that hideous Catwoman movie.
The new deal also includes any t.v. spinoffs, merchandise, profits from the previous movie and all licensing rights including certain rights to The Sarah Connor Chronicles T.V. show which still hasn’t had it’s pilot picked up by anyone yet.
What’s your thoughts on this guys? Surely it’s a strange move to keep the writers from the weakest film in the franchise when you are going for a completely new cast, tone and direction. Can three more movies work, without Arnie or Cameron’s involvement?
Who for The Terminator? Who for director? Can’t help but feel those will be the make or break decisions in the upcoming months.

I wouldn’t get too thrilled about hiriing any of the Terminator alumni writers. Will Wisher co-wrote Terminator 2 with Cameron, then he turned around and wrote Judge Dredd, among other bombs.
James Cameron was asked to do T-3, offered a TON of money, since it would have been his first film since Titanic, but he said he didn’t want to do another Temrinator film because, he felt, “the story had been told.” Cameron is a certifiable genius, and if he says it’s done, then what makes the lamebrains think they’ll get it right?
If they’re bringing in a new thrust for the franchise then they need a real visionary. They’re not telling merely another installment in the frnahcise, they’re basically rebuilding it. Hopefully they’ll find an exceptional director and really skilled writers -but I’m not optimisitc. Scott Frank is my choice for screenwriter, Spielberg uses him for almost all his projects. If not Frank get the guy who wrote Children of Men.
It’s true but of course visionary directors are the hardest to come by.
I would love to see Mark Romanek get a chance with something big. I know he’s got The Wolf Man remake coming up but T4 couldn’t have been a great fit for him.
I am not getting excited by the new terminator trilogy. The whole reason the T1, T2 and T3 was massive was because of Arnie. It would be like going to the pub and drinking water! And to try and make another reported 3 doesn’t make sense and will bad name the excisting trilogy. They should of left it at T2 the best one of the 3. Saying all this i will probably still go and see the new one incase they have got it right but would of preferred them to of waited for arnie to do it.
I don’t think that anyone should start a new trilogy because I personally thought T1 and T2 were the best of the 3 (mainly because I’m a Michael Biehn fan and even though MB’s cameo appearance in T2 was cut from the theatrical film it was put back in, in the DVD release, I think that MB is a great actor and Arnold is a great actor too). Personally if they are going to do the next set of trilogy, I think they should have brought back the original Terminator alums instead of who they are going to use now (maybe MB could have played the older version of John Connor, after all, MB’s character, Kyle Reese, is John’s father).
