It would seem that Disney have ran out of theme park rides to generate their movie ideas from and they have now turned to the avenue must other studio’s are venturing into…. comic books.
The studio has acquired the rights to The Surrogates, attaching director Jonathan Mustow and the writing talents of Michael Ferris and John Brancato to work on the picture. The trio last worked together on Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.
More info from Variety…
Published by Top Shelf Comix, the graphic novel, written by Robert Venditti and illustrated by Brett Weldele, is set in a futuristic world where humans live in isolation. They interact vicariously, through surrogate robots.
It sounds as if the writers believe the story is relevant for today’s audience, who have their own second life on the Internet (us!). This is what Brancato told the trade…
“This is a Philip K. Dick-like futuristic universe, but people who live a second life already on the Internet can relate to some of the themes here”
Speaking of Dick, I finally got around to watching the latest movie set in his universe, A Scanner Darkly.
Although I’m a big fan of some of Dick’s adapted films like Minority Report and especially Blade Runner AND even though director Richard Linklater is a favourite of mine…. A Scanner Darkly disapointed me greatly.
I felt too detached from the film, never being allowed to be drawn in and always distanced from what was going on. It was a very frustrating experience, and I’m sure I will have a review up sometime in the near future.
