We’ve spoken many, many times about Superman Returns and my gross dislike of the film and my huge disappointment at the direction that Bryan Singer took with the picture after making several great movies, including two good comic book flicks with X-Men and X-Men 2.
But I’ve also always said that I’m not adverse to giving Singer another go. He has in the past talked about going “Wrath of Khan” on the movie and I would really like to see a darker Supes flick. Something that doesn’t involve Lex Luthor for a change. Maybe something that doesn’t heavily involve Lois Lane, especially if Kate Bosworth is playing the character again.
The future of Superman: The Man of Steel has been extremely uncertain with both Bryan Singer and Warner Bros. execs being far more interested in working on other projects. I mean the whole point of the JLA flick was to replace Superman sequel on the release schedule.
But the interest is finally back for the franchise. Here’s IESB…
Ok, here’s the big news, Robert has informed me that he has confirmed that yes, Bryan Singer is 100% on the sequel to his 2004 revamp Superman Returns. He has since confirmed this with studio sources so take this one to the bank.
Word is Transformers/Star Trek scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are considering being behind the project… The pair are apparently in talks and have had “several meetings” regarding the film.
Orci & Kurtzman again?
So that’s Superman, Transformers, Mission Impossible and Star Trek… four massive universes they have shaped with their writings. Is it really such a good thing for these franchises to be written by the same writers and their same formula?
And was Transformers REALLY that good to warrant these guys working on Supes? Yeah, it made a ton of money but it wasn’t Shakespeare.
Good to hear work is back on for a Superman sequel. I actually would rather see that than a JLA film BUT there does need to be a complete overhaul from the original film. I wouldn’t go as far as the Hulk movie and re-cast everything but I would say a movie that is distanced from Richard Donner and the vision from Superman Returns is definitely needed.

Orci & Kurtzman sure would increase the action, but I don’t think they’d be able to make the film as great as it could be. I pretty much hated everything about SR except for the score and some of the sequences. In the end, for me, the film was just boring and didn’t feel like a Superman film. I could do without a sequel. I think Singer shouldn’t come back since it seems he doesn’t understand Superman well enough. Just the Donner films and he still screwed that up. He created too much baggage. In particular, Super Kid…

And I feel sorry for Routh. He was barely in the film and didn’t have as many lines as he should’ve had. Probably because he’s the new guy. I mean, he is the title character. It felt more like a Lex Luthor and Lois film. Mostly Lex. Also, there’s the fact that he was cast for the fact of how much he looked like Reeve, who I think he looks nothing like. And there’s the fact he wasn’t able to make the character his own. He was just told to act like Reeve’s take on the character of Clark/Superman, which I think doesn’t fit with today’s audience.
I really dont want to see this film with Singer in charge,”Wrath of Kahn” may have worked for Star Trek but it wont work for Superman.
The problem for me is that Singer is obviously obsessed with Donner and Wrath..I really dont want to see a remake of Wrath either, it’s been done already!
Please Singer Just walk away from this franchise before you fuck it up again, you could always do X-Men 4 instead!
Nuff said.
Orci & Kurtzman? Geez, Superman just went from dirt to pure shit in 2 seconds flat.
I swear that studio is run by retarded monkeys. They’re just punishing the fans by beating us down with their gross incompetence. Everybody was looking forward to a new director. Sequel or reboot, at least we knew we’d get a new director. Then the studio completely f’d that up too.
Here is a spot on quote from the Hot Blog:
“But the truth is, we all know that Jeff Robinov has been a mediocre top movie exec for years now, living off of franchises that are hard to ruin while making some of the most expensive misses in movie history. Maybe marketing – still without a chief – could have done better. But you have to have the images to sell. And any exec spending more than 100 million making and selling any one movie better be thinking clearly about how they are going to sell it going into the process.”
Can Jeff Robinov become the most hated man in fandom? Yes he can! Singer isn’t far behind him.
The problem isn’t making Superman a bit more gritty and more action, hell any respectable Hollywood writer can do that, the problem is that Superman in this medium is fatally geared towards a more familial audience. Unlike Batman who is definitely a bit more dark and serious in nature Superman is just the ultimate do-gooder, therein lies the ultimate problem.
Honestly with Hollywood these days, especially the executives, they are just worried about the ROI (Return on Investments). Its understandable but, they should take a bit more chance with new writers and a bit more challenging direction for a beloved character. The bottom line is, Hollywood writers are not averse to changing things up, the problem is that executive types are just not on the same page. What was all the writers strike all about then?…money. ‘Nuff said.
Also, Superman isn’t supposed to be some chick flick. Isn’t that how Singer described SR? I still think Singer created too much baggage with that film. And no drama for the sake of drama. When people do that, it turns into crap like having Superman have sex with a woman, get her pregnant, erase her memory, leave for five years to go to a planet he already knows doesn’t exist, come back and think it’ll be like he never left. Does that sound like Superman to you?
Ditto what JaySmack wrote.
Lencho, most of your comments are right on. Singer added nothing to the original Superman films (which I do not think, overall, were that great anyway). His only “updating” was giving Superman a bastard child. And you are completely right: Singer does not understand Superman, he only understands Donner.
Here is my main beef with the film — it wasn’t that there wasn’t enough action. Well I mean yeah, that’s true, there wasn’t … but it was that the love story SUCKED. Lois Lane wasn’t even likeable, Superman behaved like a player/deadbeat dad, and Richard got screwed over … that is the worst love triangle ever. It belongs in a soap opera, not in a Superman movie. Additionally, I don’t have a problem w/ Luthor, if he is done the correct way … but he surely wasn’t. Instead of a dark, sinister character (i.e. smallville), he was goofy, campy and once again obsessed with land. Give me a break. Putting more action in the film will NOT fix any of these problems. SINGER NEEDS TO GO!!!!!!!!!
I’ve always had a bit-o- beef with the Man Of Steel. First of all, He’s An effing god for crying out loud! I mean heat vison, freezing breath, invulnerability, flight, stamina, strength. How anyone on Earth Possibly beat him without using a dinky little rock? They Can’t! That’s why you get someone whose not from Earth to be the villian, spice up the batch a bit with someone new. DOOMSDAY, DARKSEID, MONGUL, someone with some bloody COHENES! Let’s take Superman off Earth on Put him on someone else’s playing field. Instead of being all supported my the media and fans, put him on his own, turn his world upsidedown! And yes, Lois Lane needs to go away for a while, Every Superhero flick has a Love interest that consumes some much damn screentime I feel like i’m on a date with me Grandmama. Take out the love, instill fear. Let’s see him pick on someone his own size. (All we’ve seen is a superpowered being beat up Humans for all these flicks, minus the 3 from Krypton) I wanna see pretty boy with the cuts and bruises he gets in the comics. For once, don’t make this an all ages family event where anyone whose never heard of a comic book can grasp the full story , I say give the fanboys their day, we made this character who he is, it’s the least that can be done, give us ONE!
