Studios back to work despite strike threat

It appears that the proposed Screen Actors strike has become so stalemated at the moment that the studios have decided to go back into full swing, despite no resolution in sight.

What this would appear to suggest is a belief in the studios that SAG has no desire to see through its proposed strike action, all of which seems to stem from the uncertainty over whether or not it would be able to command the 75% of the vote needed to take action.

Variety is now reporting that even with the SAG contract expired since June, a number of productions have continued shooting, including Clint Eastwood’s “Gran Torino,” and the follow up to “The Da Vinci Code,” “Angels & Demons.” Even the already delayed “Prince of Persia” has begun shooting in Morocco, although any action could again hamper this production.

The threat has not completely evaporated however, and SAG National Exec Doug Allen was in bullish mood when questioned about the current stand off on Thursday:

“Any studio or network that suggests Screen Actors Guild is unwilling or unable to take that step, should management prove intractable, is apparently unaware of our history,”

There are murmurs however that this is mere sabre rattling, and with an election in September for the guilds board of directors, there is the real possibility that things might be being put off till the results are known.

Earlier in the year, a petition was signed by over a thousand of the SAG’s members, asking that voting privileges only be restricted to members who had worked at least one day in the last year, and it is believed that the more successful actors in the guild are not behind the strike, and might even be moving to overturn the board in September.

Whatever the outcome though, it would appear that the Studio’s now believe that no action will be taken between now and then at least. Things might become a lot more different after the SAG elections however.
