Variety are reporting that Justin Marks has been hired to write a screenplay for another movie adaptation of the video game franchise Street Fighter. Hyde Park and Capcom, the Japenese publishers of the cult game are on board to produce.
This is the second time the video game has been adapted onto film after the debacle that was the Jean-Claude Van Damme and Kylie Minogue star vehicle of 1994. That movie is so bad it’s comical, it’s very rare a film ends up as bad as that but I’m not sure what they were expecting when they hired the cast they did.
The second attempt at Street Fighter will have no relation to the first movie a decade ago and will focus on the female character of Chun-Li who was actually introduced to the franchise in the second game Street Fighter II.
The movie is set to be released sometime in 2008 which will mark the 20th anniversary of the video game franchise. I must admit I haven’t played much Street Fighter, I was always a big Mortal Kombat fan myself so the only Street Fighter I know was the crappy movie.
Any fans of the game exicted by this? Is Chun-Li the best character to base a movie on? Anyone else think Mortal Kombat was THE KING of this kind of video game?

Without doubt Street Fighter was the ultimate two player fighter game! Street Fighter 2 has got to go down as one of the most entertaining and life spanning games that have ever come out. Don’t get me wrong, Mortal Combat was a good game, but there was something about the brutality and the actual raw fighting of street fight which made in undisputable king. Saying that both the early MK and SF games far superior than any other arcade fighting games of the last two generation consoles. Tekken and others such as Ultimate Fighter pale in significance to the amount of fun that was acieved when sittin down to play Street Fighter 2 or Mortal COmbat on the Mega Drive. I would ask the question of when the gaming franchise will come up with any fighting game that could compare to SF, but when I think about it, whats the point nothing else is needed!
i haven’t seen the original street fighter…but i say in this movie, better story, more chicks and action, and more recognized actors.
Come on!!, Van Damme and Kylie Minogue for the original? Were the casting directors on acid? Was it all an inside joke casting them? lol…and no just AMERICAN people in the movie…i say make the main lead of asian descent, but american-based with good sex appeal. maybe the villain can be german or other nationality, but no stereotypical “huge angry black man” or “sadistic russian.” it all gets old after a while… Not so risque like the upcoming “Dead or Alive” movie(ugh..). And the villains need to have serious personalities and huge relevance to the plot instead of being introduced like video game bosses…(once again, havent seen the original so i dunno if thats how it is in the movie, but i can only guess it could be)
If this movie had the right amount of babes, fight scenes, interesting villain(s), a great story, and kick-ass one liners, then this I would love to see and im sure many others would too.
Ok, I’ve seen a lot of sites post this one up. If they are going to do a story about Chunli, they need to do it right and pay the right homage to my favorite fighter. They need to make sure they have the fact that her and deceased father were dectectives of Interpol and that she’s the possible winner of the Street Fighter II tournament. The writers should consult with UDON since they told Chunli’s storyline the best way possible.
I would be extremely disappointed if they can’t pull this off correctly. Like I said: UDON.
