Steven Spielberg & Will Smith remaking OLDBOY

What can you say? We all know it ain’t going to work. I hate to dismiss a big Hollywood project from this early a stage but I will eat a live octopus if this movie ends up being anything but a disaster.

Variety carry the news this morning that the biggest movie star on the planet, Will Smith, is to work with the legendary Steven Spielberg for the very first time on what is likely to be a July 4th Hollywood Blockbuster. Right on! That gets you excited huh? And you know, usually I would be too… hoping for maybe a new MINORITY REPORT with Will Smith (I, ROBOT, I AM LEGEND) in the lead.

Think again…

They are remaking the disturbing, the frightening, the absolute one movie that I can guarantee will leave you with the God damn shakes and that’s Chan-wook Park’s 2003 Korean thriller OLDBOY. Already the remake is doomed. There ain’t no way in anyone’s imagination that this material should be seen with a wide multiplex release on a July 4th weekend. Just no way.

And if you water it down to secure that kind of release, then what’s the point? You are stripping away what makes the original such an effective and unforgettable viewing experience.

The pair are in “early discussions” with Dreamworks (who are trying to secure remake rights from Mandate who have so far failed to get the project off the ground) with Universal lined up to distribute.

Spielberg is on the lookout for a writer. Over the last few years Spielberg and Smith have been desperate to work together and they came close early this year on THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 only to see the project fall apart because of the writers strike.

I can’t imagine anyone who seen the original OLDBOY will think this is a good idea.

When stupid stupid crap fucking ideas like this pop up, you can always answer the question WHYYYYYYY? with “It’s gonna make money, that’s why”. But here – it’s just beyond that. How can this possibly make money? (We all know of course it will, a movie about fucking Chihuahuas make quazillions) but still, whyyyy? If they actually, against all odds, do the right thing, and everyone knows that aint gonna happen, people will get offended and traumatized and crap in their pants and demand their money back, and it will fail the box office. If they water it down to just a normal revenge movie with a raw steak instead of an octopus etc. the fanbase will (at least one hopes) inflict so much bad karma over the movie and not paying a dime to see it, that again the movie will make no money.
So if not even the over all main goal in hollywood, the $$$$$$$$$$$$ looks to be fulfilled, why would you do such a thing? Is the new main goal of hollywood perhaps no longer money, but in fact to piss, puke and shit on everything solid and good? Has Hollywood become the bully in the kinder garden that steals everyone else’s cool toys and destroy them, because he didn’t have one himself? it really fucking looks like it.

unbelievable.un fucking believable. im really sorry for swearing but this.. old boy is something you leave alone. why remaking a absolute classic? my god. i dont have anything else to say. horrible.

You would think that a brilliant director and visionary like Spielberg would have some “Original” ideas for a film, rather than the half-assed idea of remaking Park’s own visionary movie. The one thing that made ‘Oldboy’ utterly fascinating was it’s unique plot, characters and mood, coupled with the other two outstanding movies as part of the overall Vengeance Trilogy, we have a series of movies that deserved to be left alone.

Hollywood has become stale and boring with its constant barrage of remaking great Asian Cinema into horrendous “Americanized” garbage. Next thing you know, someone will remake the Classic “Infernal Affairs” and create a role for an out of place actor like Mark Wahlberg whos character was not in the original, and then change the ending of the movie…oh, wait…sorry, they did that already!

Mr. Spielberg, at the absolute least, if you continue down this ill conceived path, you need to dump Will Smith for an unknown actor who doesn’t pollute this role with his previous movie baggage, but hey, who am I except a ticket paying member of the public movie world.

OLDBOY will not be at all good because American violent films are cliched now. We don’t understand true pain. Secondly, the actual relationship in the film will not be actually done by Will Smith because he has to be viewed as a good guy because if political reasons. Our man in OLDBOY is not, and for a good reason.

I haven’t seen the original film yet, but have heard some great things.

Instead of remaking the film, why don’t they just release the original, slap Spielberg’s name on it like “Steven Spielberg Presents,” and dub it for those too lazy to read subtitles? Hell, they could ever get famous people like Smith to do voice over work if they’re afraid that the film won’t sell on its own.

I wish Hollywood was a guy so i could kick it in the nuts.

Spielberg and company know that 99% of the masses have not seen Oldboy, so from there side of the fence its a good idea! There just playing the numbers game. They only see it as a business opportunity! Nothing more and nothing less!

of course it’s a numbers game, but that game is bullshit. From an artistic point of view there is absolutely no reason to make a remake. but yeah..who cares about that.

I’ve not seen the original, but from what I’ve learned, there is no way in a green hell this will work. It’s not just the content of the original – it’s the addition of Will Smith. He reads a little bit too much of a goodie-goodie to carry this with the same emotional resonance as the original. But the damned thing of it all is that this is so obviously a Hollywood trainwreck, who here can deny the interest of seeing it soley out of morbid curiousity?

if this movie makes any money ill cut my tongue off

Old Boy is a great movie. Will Smith and Speilberg must respect the true gritty and extreme nature of this movie. Can it be done? Sure it can! But will they do, it only the movie it self will tell. It should be intresting to say the least. Hey it got fot all of us intrested and most of us as mush as we say that we hate to see this movie made, will go see it.

Leaving a scornful comment on here seems a little bit silly in regard to those who have not seen the original. I understand that a lot of the people who write on here (myself included) view Hollywood as a bit of a cancer of the film industry due to it’s lack of artistic forethought and money-fuelled priorities, but perhaps a little bit of homework needs to be done before you can start barking up this tree.

It’s all well and good to start with “I haven’t actually seen the original, but I’ve heard that…” but such a lazy approach only leads to the kind of unoriginality that Hollywood itself is guilty of.

Those of you that haven’t seen the film will cite Will Smith and Spielberg’s involvement in the project as the main reasons for it’s failure on an artistic level (let’s be honest, it WILL be a commercial success whatever shape it takes simply because of the pull of those two names) but it’s the artistic level that you don’t understand because you haven’t seen the film!

The fact that you are right really holds no water in this matter because it’s clear that you have read the comments and gone along with the general concensus on display.

I think the main stumbling block for the remake, which was pointed out by Trey, is that the plot, characters and mood of the film are so rooted in eastern culture that any attempt to adapt them for a western audience would involve changing them almost beyond recognition. It has a lot to do with the expectations of people who go to see mainstream films because they are the people that lap up Will Smith movies and Steven Spielberg movies, but also I think equally as much to do with western fans of the original film. Even if Spielberg kept everything the same – plot, characters, mood, ants; everything, even though we know that isn’t going to happen – it still wouldn’t make sense in a western context; it would look and feel entirely out of place.

The fact that Hollywood doesn’t really like to dabble in themes such as incest (sorry for the spoiler those who haven’t seen it!!!) is the least of this project’s problems. I really can’t see any possible way that the heart of the film’s plot can be kept intact if it is westernised and it making any sense at all even if it’s not.

How dare you attempt to remake old boy! How dare you try to use old boy as a marketing scheme and profit off of one of the greatest movies ever made by putting someone as corny as Will Smith in Oh Dae su’s shoes and taking Steven Spielberg to be the director! These two are out of their fucking minds! Godamn the watered down bullshit that this movie will turn into! Godamn it!

MrPounds on September 10, 2009 at 2:42 am

But if you want to look at this realisticly… Steven Spielberg created one of the best movies ever made (Schindler’s list) along with many other classics and will probably do something at least relatively enjoyable by re-making old boy. I’m sure i’ll like the original more than his version, but he’s an absolutely amazing director who will come up with something to make this re-make good.
