You want further proof that J.J. Abrams (yeah apparentaly he is confirmed as directing it again) is going to piss on the legacy of Star Trek and totally dismiss it’s long running history?
Well he has given Star Trek XI a film title, it’s going to be called Star Trek.
In other words… forget every other Star Trek movie like Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan or Star Trek: First Contact, this movie is Star Trek.
A brand new re-start basically, although the writers Alex Kurtman and Roberto Orci would like you to think otherwise…
”We’re not going to start totally from scratch…We want it to feel like it’s updated and of the now. That’s actually the discussions we’re having now: how to keep the look of the universe yet have it not look like nothing’s new. It’s tricky.”
They went on, confirming it’s likely to turn into a Mission Impossible/Alias type movie…
“There will be more action in this movie than any ‘Trek’ that’s preceded it… “It’ll be the biggest one. The economic models of the other [films] were very much based on the fans out there and their purchasing power. With this one we’re going for the broad audience to bring people into ‘Trek’ for the first time.”
At least it won’t be set in the Academy though which was a previous worry….
“I don’t know how you make ‘Star Trek’ without a starship…You have to trek through the stars, so you need a ship for that. There, you got something out of us!”
I know I’m really harsh on Abrams, especially when I liked Mission Impossible III and some Lost episodes are fantastic. It’s just I can’t see him as being the right man for this job, and everything he said or the writers have said about the project, have left me in dread.
“Going for the broad audience”…. is the most worrying quote there could be for this because it shows their intent to piss of the fanbase by changing the fundamental elements of the series, to get non-trek fans into the theatres.
Very worrying indeed. Star Trek is still scheduled for a Christmas day release next year.
