In a strange decision, Universal Pictures have pushed back the comic book adaptation WANTED starring James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman from a March 28th release, to a June 27th opening.
Strange because it will now be going up against the Tom Cruise/Bryan Singer picture VALKYRIE and also a Pixar flick WALL-E, which is seriously expected to make some great cash next year.
Although we had heard previously that VALKYRIE had been delayed until August, but still… it’s WALL-E they need to be worrying about. Yeah LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD managed to save the wrath of the Rats this summer, but then again DIE HARD was always going to make some money. This one just simply has no guarantee’s.
I quite enjoyed the trailer for WANTED and although I think McAvoy is totally mis-cast in the role of an ordinary guy who follows in his father’s footsteps and becomes a deadly assassin, I think this has potential to be a pretty fun movie.
No reason given for the delay, but it seems at this point to be tactical rather than forced because of production issues.

I agree that McAvoy is TOTALLY miscast. He works as an effeminate girly-man in Last King of Scotland, but that was only because everyone really wanted to see Forest Whittaker play a stereotypical “African” dictator.
But let’s be honest ANYONE could have played McAvoy’s part–what’s his name from Lord of the Rings (he was on LOST) or Elijah Wood or Orlando Bloom. Come one, McAvoy is not leading man, or action hero material. I’d rather have seen Josh Lucas–an acotr I can’t stand, but at least am willing to buy in the role of a geekish everyman.
