Confirming a story that was first leaked in April, Vinnie Jones’ upcoming horror MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN based on the Clive Barker short story will only receive a limited 100 theatre run on August 1st from Lionsgate before going straight to DVD (October-ish).
And get this - the only reason it’s getting a release at all is to fulfill theatrical contractual obligation with Lakeshore.
OUCH! An unceremonious Hollywood debut for the visually lauded Japanese director Ryuhei Kitamura.
Like I said in April - this most be absolutely AWFUL if it’s not getting a theatrical run because from the trailer the director has delivered exactly what the studio promoted (a no holds barred, horrific slasher flick) when it was first announced.
Guess we will find out later this year.

Unsurprising, unfortunately. The studio seems to have had absolutely no faith in this - presumably because it looks to be an intelligent and full-blooded flick they can’t chop up for a PG-13. Most studios seem to be assuming that if it’s not a remake and isn’t called “Saw”, an R rating is too risky. A damn shame, but the writing was on the wall with this one when they announced the title change.
It’s not absolutely terrible news though. If it’s as good as it looks, it’ll be a big hit on DVD and that’s usually where these movies make the lion’s share of their cash anyway.
