Sienna Miller first cast in G.I. JOE!

Stephen Sommers has begun his casting for G.I. JOE and this should mark the first of many announcements on the film in the following weeks.

Variety say 26 year old British actress Sienna Miller will play the female lead in the film, the feisty Baroness…

Baroness serves as the COBRA Organization’s intelligence officer and lieutenant to Cobra Commander. With long black hair, black rimmed glasses, and a black leather outfit, Baroness is a dark, sensual femme fatale whose beauty is matched only by her ruthlessness. In both comic and cartoon incarnations, she has romantic relationships with Destro.

Sienna Miller

Miller is one of those actresses’ who is probably more famous for her off-screen work than her film career but I think I would be doing the girl a dis-service if I dismissed her career completely.

She was of course in STARDUST earlier this year, got her kit off for FACTORY GIRL and was briefly in ALFIE and LAYER CAKE. She has yet to prove herself as a leading female female but then for G.I. JOE she doesn’t need too, as this will be a big ensemble of stars.

If not stars, they should be more well known than the cast found for STAR TREK and probably JLA.

No word yet on whether AVATAR actor Sam Worthington will be in the film, after holding talks for the picture a few weeks back.

So there you go, first casting is complete. I know nothing about G.I. Joe, so I’m going for the ‘no comment’ here (although I will say this, Miller is better in movies where she doesn’t need to talk).

Coming Soon says G.I. JOE will be released on August 7th, 2009 where at the moment it will be going up directly against the Tony Scott directed and Denzel Washington/John Travolta starrer THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123.

  1. Im not excited by this casting, I find her to be incredibly bland and not really right for the role.

  2. I’m with Tino. Famke Janssen would have been my choice. I’m REALLY surprised Stephen Sommers would screw the pooch as badly as this. I’ve never seen Miller do any acting –I’m not even sure she can. I rate her slightly higher than Keira Knightley. She doesn’t even look like the Baroness, more like the Baroness’ homely little niece.

If this is how Sommer’s sensibilities are slanting these days I can see why Universal chose Rob Cohen to helm Mummy 3. I’ve been a supporter of Sommer’s and am nowhere near ready to sh*tcan GI Joe just because of one lousy casting choice, but I’m about as rabid about GI Joe as Transformers.
Casting is crucial and unless the Baroness is only a bit-player you can’t mis-cast like this.

  3. Miller is the best actress of her age group right now. She was absolutely fantastic in Factory Girl, she shouldnt have been snubbed by all the awards. She can act circles around the likes of Portman and Johansenn. Mark my words, in a few years time she’ll be huge.

  4. Couple of things Jaysmack…

If you’ve never seen Sienna Miller act I find it strange you could rate her higher than Knightley.

And Universal did offer Sommers a nice deal for The Mummy 3 but he wisely turned them down.

I haven’t actually seen Factory Girl yet Dave, but I’ve heard good things about her performance. It’s her co-star from that movie that put me off seeing it.

  5. You weren’t listening, Matt. I didn’t say I never saw her in a movie, (Factory Girl was filmed right here in Shreveport, my home town!) I said I never saw her “act.” She hams it up for the camera, she emotes from time to time, but has she ever actually created and interpreted a character through performace? Not even close!
Knightley has as much dimension as a cardboard box, but Miller’s “skills” could easily be compared to a wooden crate. Now maybe in another ten years or so, when she’s gotten some more practice and is offered roles that play to her strengths (though I can’t imagine what those could possibly be!) maybe then she’ll set the world on fire, and no doubt make quite a few converts, myself among them.
But right now, IMHO, she’s mediocre. Looks isn’t talent.

Yes, I was aware Sommers had been offered Mummy 3 at some point –I had read that –albeit on another site, whose blasphemous name shall NEVER be uttered!– before becoming so sick of what I was seeing that I decided to just ignore all M3 news altogether. What I was saying above (tongue FIRMLY planted in cheek) was that if Sommers actually has so little understanding of something as simple as GI Joe that he can’t even be bothered to get one of the main characters properly cast, then it’s understandable that Universal would look at the Mummy 3 and say, “Hey, any old hack can crap out a Mummy movie. All we need is an overrated fool who’s choices are a little…stupid. That’s what Sommers was.”
I’m having to rethink a lot of things I thought I believed about Sommers. I felt his casting ability was one of his strongest traits. Kind of like what Michael Bay could be if Bay had brains. But seeing how badly he’s f**ked up the Baroness by not going with an actress in her late thirties, early-forties, I can see Sommers is going the George Miller pedophile route. Bad choice!
Sommer doesn’t have to cast whoever it is I want-I’ve got an open mind. But I get sick and tired of seeing these movies where the casting is so dmaned obviously wrong! Famke Janssen would have been the BEST choice, but there’s certainly a ton of actresses out there who could have done it –Lena Headey or Connie Nielsen comes to mind. But the Baroness isn’t some ingenue teeny-bopper. I’m really surprised at Sommers making this move… and REALLY disappointed.

Now if you think highly of Sienna Miller, that’s fine (I’m a fan of Stephen Sommers, though it seems few others are) but I’m simply stating my opinion of her acting.

  6. I still think she’s too young, but I take back the part about “homely.” That was a mite harsh. It’s understandable how, based solely on how she preened for the camera for all those “interview” scenes in Factory Girl, Sommers would look at her and say, “She looks like she could pass for an elegant European noblewoman.” Perhaps, but problem is, she needs to have an air of command and danger to her.
Does anyone seriously get that vibe from Miller? Seriously. Be honest. She doesn’t.

But I don’t retract anything else. Seeing her trying to put on an Eastern European accent will be laughable -nay, ridiculous! I hope Sommers reconsiders.
