Shyamalan casts THE LAST AIRBENDER

M. Night Shyamalan has begun casting THE LAST AIRBENDER. Yes amazingly Paramount Pictures have kept faith with the much maligned filmmaker after possibly the most embarrassing Summer blockbuster in years with this summer’s THE HAPPENING.

Something tells me they will be keeping a very close eye on this movie through every stage of production. This one will have a big budget, they can’t allow M.Night’s ego to run away with him here because they are hoping to have a high profile trilogy spawned from this movie.

From EW

After an open casting call in Texas, Shyamalan discovered karate star Noah Ringer and offered him the part of Airbender’s 12-year old hero, Aang, an Avatar with superpowers who must stop the Fire Nation from destroying the world. Twilight’s Jackson Rathbone has been asked to play Aang’s pal Sokka, while Nicola Peltz (Deck the Halls) will star as his sister Katara. Genial singer Jesse McCartney, meanwhile, is negotiating to play against type in the role of the Fire Nation’s evil prince Zuko.

/film have taken the trouble of taking character/actor comparison photo’s, which is very useful and you can find that HERE.

THE LAST AIRBENDER, based on the popular Nickelodeon T.V. series will be released on July 2nd 2010.

While im excited to see this movie, I can’t believe a director like Shyamalan (who is asian) is completely white washing the characters with his casting choices. This was a series based on asian cultures and alot of the characters that appreared on the show were clearly of asian origin or non white. This type of thing sickens me with regard to hollywood not allowing minorities to fully shine.

I have a feeling that this is more of Paramount’s cast than Shyamalan’s. Feels too Hollywood if you know what I mean. So, yeah. Paramount’s keeping a close eye on him.

Now, I think it’s obvious how much Asian influence is on this show. I always under the impression that these characters were Asian and Inuit. But, the Earth Kingdom could be a melting pot of Asian and White people.

I knew there would definitely aim for having White people in the main cast based on the character descriptions given to those who wanted audition. All of them said “male/female, Caucasian or any other ethnicity.” I’m really disappointed that pretty much all of them are White. I was hoping to see a mix or what looks like a mix of races at least. I don’t know what Ringer looks like, so I’m holding out hope that he’s part Asian. This is almost as bad as Jake Gyllenhaal as The Prince of Persia.

As for the cast specifically, I hoped they get people who looked more the characters. Can’t say anything about Ringer. At least he knows karate. Rathbone looks too old to pass off as 16. Peltz might be ok. I know nothing of her. I’m going to guess that she’s older than whatever age she was when she took that pic. McCartney really feels like stunt casting. Is he that popular among kids or something? I don’t know. Besides that, is he able to pull off the brooding/pissed off type of character Zuko is?

I’m a huge fan of the show and the thing that bothers me the most of the cast is Jackson . He played a pale ,immortal vampire who can somewhat control emotions and is a very serious character. He is going to play a dark colored 16 year old teen whose voice cracks and is the comic relief guy.The only then in common is that they are the plan guys.i believe other cating call for Sokka and maybe Katara for i never seen or heard of Nicola Peltz. I agree with the Jesse? Zuko thing. I think the reason the picked him is for his moves (i never seen him dance)May be to make the whole training them process go a bit faster.

A lot of people — fans and non-fans alike — are upset about the casting policy Paramount has adopted with this film. If you’re as offended as we are, or if you’re curious to find out more about people’s objections and what they’re trying to do about it, links and information can all be found here:

S’not Shyamalan’s fault, he chose great characters so shut your faces. He wasn’t given much to work with in the first place. Avatar is an AMERICAN born and bred cartoon. People are just so uptight about racism these days. Why can’t people just get over themselves? I personally think Aang is adorable. I just hope they give Dev Zuko’s scar -and put it on the correct cheek. It sounds like Shyamalan’s doing the best he can, so give him some slack. Shut up about how you’re upset because the cast is mostly white. We’re all God’s children and we’re ALL beautiful. No CHILD is going to care about racial issues going into making the movie. All they’re going to care about is getting to see their hero Aang, and have a chance to believe he, and his fantasy world, are real. You want to take that away just because the cartoon is a white AMERICAN-cartoon?
Who cares whether someone is white, Asian, black, Mexican, Indian or whatever… You shouldn’t. Children don’t. If only every human could share the faith, ignorance, and acceptance of a child’s heart. I do, and I’m an adult. My best friends are Mexican, and I think black people are awesome. I’m the one white weirdo in my crowd full of multi-racial friends and I’m proud of it. No CHILD cares that EVERYONE in the CARTOON is WHITE, so STICK THAT IN YOUR JUICEBOX and SUCK IT!!!
