Sean Penn & Johnny Depp in THE THREE STOOGES?

Ok, so all you know my usual policy on rumor. We don’t post them.

So when FilmDrunk run the story that Sean Penn and Johnny Depp have been offered roles in The Farrelly Brothers movie THE THREE STOOGES, based on Larry, Moe & Curly…. then we would usually dismiss it.

However, there might be something to this post. FilmDrunk claim they have a source. A source that is close enough to know that famous voice actor Billy West is meeting this week with Penn to help him with his Larry impression.

So is there really something to this?

FilmDrunk say Penn has been offered Larry, Depp has been offered Moe and the role of Curly is still up for grabs. How about Paul Giamatti?

Somehow in the space of three years this project has gone from being a Ben Stiller vehicle that was likely to star Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell into one that has grabbed the attention of the most respected actors working today.

One who was Oscar nominated for SWEENEY TODD last year and another that is expected to win the statue this year for his career defining role in MILK.

Unless they are MASSIVE fans of THE STOOGES, I just can’t see what would attract the likes of Penn or Depp.

IF (and it’s clear it’s not, because it’s a Farrelly Brothers comedy in the vein of THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY), it was a biopic about the three actors playing the characters and not the characters themselves, then I could see an attraction. Ya know, a movie a little like MAN ON THE MOON, then I could see it. But as it is, I just don’t.

I say bullshit… unless The Farrelly Brothers have completed changed the kind of movie they were intending here.

oh god, this is horrible horrible news then. As much as I would fucking LOVE seeing Johnny Depp in a wild comedy like this, this is not appropriate for him, or at least this particular role. They really should get people who are experienced comedians for the parts…I mean seriously- SEAN PENN was the best they could think for Larry? Oh brother….

p.s- your photoshop picture is incorrect. if you’re saying SEan Penn had been offered role for Larry, his face should be pasted on the guy on the right(who is undoubtedly Larry). The one on the left is actually Curly. just sayin.

you guys run a movie site and don’t even know which Stooge is which? Wow.

I mean understandably you’re from overseas and perhaps the Stooges weren’t as popular over there. I probably couldn’t name characters from old British shows or Australian shows and what not. But then again I’m not the one posting news about it. And if I did I’d make sure what I posted was right. At least you guys could have done a little research. I’ve noticed a lot of poor reporting as of late. I used to really like this site too.

@TheOneWhoKnows- personally Im quite up to speed with the Stooges, Im a big fan of their comedy in fact. I even remember the little-seen biopic on the trio that came out in 2000 starring Michael Chiklis of all people.

Entitled as you are to your own opinions, generally suggesting the presence of “poor reportings” is of little help. Be a bit more constructive and it gives us the chance to work on it.

The One Who Knows doesn’t actually know shit mainly because this post is about the actors Penn and Depp playing characters and the opinions on this development not the photo shopping job of one face over another I mean I’m pretty sure it was put together as a visual reference real quick not a fucking poster just shut up and comment on the story not the visual aid and like Simon says if you have something to suggest suggest it don’t just write vague critisms. And by the way this is a terrible idea and I can’t possible see this coming true and also as good as Penn was in Milk Rourke is better.

The only thing I reported was that Penn was preparing for a meeting about it, not that he was offered the role. The rest of story all came from inTouch and I have no way of verifying what they said.

@Dan Balvin

Visual aid or not, Sean Penn has been paste over Curly. The rumor is that he was up for the role of Larry. So any way you look at it the picture is wrong. It doesn’t matter how much you want to argue, it’s wrong. It’s not congruent with the news reported in the article.

And Simon, I was referring to the author of the post. I don’t even know who you are. Unless you’re Matt Holmes, I’m not sure why you even bothered to respond to my post.
