According to EW’s sources, if Emily Blunt bails on IRON MAN 2 to work with Jack Black on the comedy adventure film GULLIVER’S TRAVELS at Fox… then replacing her as Black Widow in the Marvel sequel might be Scarlett Johansson.
Their “sources around Hollywood” claim that Johansson is interested in the role which will lead onto bigger things in future films and Marvel of course are attracted by the big name.
I do genuinely like Johansson and despite her struggling to look comfortable in any role since MATCH POINT four years ago, I do think she is a really talented actress. She just needs the right material to shine and someone who knows how to use her because her range doesn’t cover anything.
In my opinion, this is not the role for her. She doesn’t have the figure of the Black Widow, the acting style or the believability to pull it off quite as easily as Emily Blunt, who after all was the perfect casting choice.
I could see Johansson as the seductive Poison Ivy in a Batman film but not as a superhero/villain in the IRON MAN franchise.
GULLIVER’S TRAVELS begins production on April 15th. IRON MAN 2 will shoot around then but currently haven’t got a finalised script… the lack of clear and definite dates on both fronts hint that Blunt won’t be able to do the film.

Johannsen is one of the LEAST capable actresses working today. Her performances are more wooden than a 2 X 4 and she has this drug-addict far-away gaze that makes her look like she doesn’t know or care where she is.
Go for Charlize Theron if they want a “brand name” actress. But don’t go for some ingenue who some brain-dead males drool for for some incomprehensible reason. Iron Man’s a quality franchise. Be a shame to wreck all that for a talentless teeny bopper.
Jay…I couldn’t agree more…Johannsen is so overrated…but she puts people in the seats and increases DVD sales…what are ya gonna do lol?
I would completely disagree about Johannsen being a talentless actress. Though I will agree with Matt, she seems to be uncomfortable in most of her roles lately.
I went to see Vicki, Christina, Barcelona last night and she was great in it. But there were certain scenes – mainly the break up scene – where her acting was very forced. It was as though she was a stroppy teenager who wanted to be back in her bed.
In terms of Black Widow, I can see why they thought of her, but I don’t think it’s very inspired casting. I’d say she’s more suitable for emotional roles and the Black Widow is the epitome of unfeeling.
Johansson seems too young for the role. Blunt at least is able to give off that maturity I would expect from the character. Johansson will look younger than the rest of the cast.
correct me if I’m wrong, but weren’t the producers avoiding casting high salary actors? They ditched Terence cuz he asked for too much, who says Scarlett isn’t going to do the same? Wasn’t there an article a while back saying she worked for lots of money cuz of all her breakthrough roles? maybe im confusing her with someone else, but i think thats who im thinking of- scarlett johanssen.
As far as the movie goes, keep her away is all i say
Officially no Emily then. Bah! I’m most unhappy because I’ve recently become obsessedwithblunt.
definately! id love to see scarlett johanssen as poison ivy!!!!
