Samuel L. Jackson will play Sho’nuff, the Shogun of Harlem, in the Columbia Pictures remake of the 1985 Berry Gordy’s cult classic THE LAST DRAGON.

The late Julius Carry played the role in the original and with a massive chip and ego on his shoulder would spout out questions such as “Am I the baddest mofo lowdown around this town?” which he would always reply with “Sho’nuff!”

Clearly he has been a big influence on the whole career of Jackson who calls himself a big fan of the movie that grossed nearly $26 million despite mostly negative reviews.

Dallas Jackson’s (founder of the urban family label DJ Classicz) script will be similar to the original, following a young a martial arts student by the name of Leory Green whose quest to achieve the highest level of martial arts accomplishment known as The Glow, takes place on the streets of New York.

RZA of Wu Tang Clang will produce the movie that will be updated with a modern day hip hop feel.

Columbia Pictures President Doug Belgrad told The Hollywood Reporter

“We’re thrilled to be working with Kerry Gordy as he continues his father’s legacy, and we’re confident that he along with John and Dallas are the perfect team to develop the project,” Belgrad said. “They will capture everything that people love about the original while also bringing a fresh edge to the remake.”

I’ve never heard, let alone seen the original film but apparentaly it has a huge cult following, lending it’s place on the same DVD shelves as those who are fans of the Bruce Lee movies.

But I can say the role sure sounds like the kind of work Jackson has been taking recently, the over-the-top villainy role which he occupies in THE SPIRIT for example. The kind of role that has made him one of the richest men in the industry.

I saw the film as a little kid. I’ll have to watch it again.

The Last Dragon was one of those movies that replayed on basic cable over and over when I was a kid in the 80s. I watched it at least 50 times, “The Glow” angle gave it a bit of a Star Wars/Matrix vibe. I can’t imagine it holds up but it could make for a fun remake.
