One of the factors for the recent delay in the production start for ANGELS & DEMONS is that Sony didn’t have a cast in place besides lead star Tom Hanks.
From the outside looking in, it seemed they were so single-minded in getting Hanks to return (remember, he’s getting big bucks for this) that they forget about the other roles.
There’s an unconfirmed rumor in the NY Post today (link seems down, originally found via Slash Film) that Naomi Watts has been cast as Vittoria Vetra in ANGELS & DEMONS, the prequel to the blockbuster hit THE DA VINCI CODE.
Basically it’s the new version of the Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou) character from the first film. This character is the new female sidekick, although having read the novel, there’s a lot more romance between the two leads in this one.
Previously we had heard that Brazilian model Gisele Bundchen was expected to land the part but this report would suggest that they have gone for experience and acting ability over looks. Not that Naomi Watts isn’t good looking or anything, but she’s not the model type.
When I saw Da Vinci last year, I was surprised that a respected actress like Audrey Tautou took on such a lame part. Is Watts about to do the same thing, or will this character be written with a bit more life and personality?

Any script written by Akiva (Batman & Robin) goldman is a sub-par script from the get-go. And since he’s writing this one too (how does this hack keep getting work? He must have some incriminating photos of SOMEBODY!) I won’t waste my money on it.
Though Watts is a better choice than that French chick from DaVinci Code.
