George-Romero7.jpgA couple of weeks ago it was announced that George A. Romero was to write and direct the thriller Solitary Island, finally moving him away from the zombie genre. Well it seems he hasn’t given up on zombies after all, as he lined himself up to write and direct Diary of the Dead.

Here is the scoop from Empire

“George Romero’s Diary Of The Dead will revolve around a bunch of student filmmakers heading into the woods to shoot a bloody horror. But they get more gore than they bargained for when they stumble on a group of zombies”.

The production on the movie starts in October which means that Solitary Island is now put on hold for the time being.

I must say I’m slightly disapointed with Romero, I was looking forward to seeing him work in a different genre away from the “living dead”. This zombie movie sounds like it will go the way of The Blair Witch Project and show footage of the zombies from the student film makers dv camera’s which will either make the film genius or really really crappy.

I still find The Blair Witch Project a little creepy, even after all this time so if Romero can bring that to the table AND his awesome work on his earlier zombie movies then this will be a must see in 2008.
