ROME: The Movie?

The premature cancelling of HBO/BBC’s Rome, has left it’s creator Bruce Heller with the only option of trying to get a big movie adaptation into production to finish off the series which was a critical and commercial success for the two seasons it ran.

The only problem was it cost too much money to make. It was a Hollywood production without the big screen box office returns and it was canned in 2006 despite it’s hit ratings. Now, The Hollywood Reporter say they are planning to do what they should have done in the first place and making a big screen movie…

“There is talk of doing a movie version,” he said. “It’s moving along. It’s not there until it is there. I would love to round that show off.”

“I discovered halfway through writing the second season the show was going to end,” Heller said. “The second was going to end with death of Brutus. Third and fourth season would be set in Egypt. Fifth was going to be the rise of the messiah in Palestine. But because we got the heads-up that the second season would be it, I telescoped the third and fourth season into the second one, which accounts for the blazing speed we go through history near the end. There’s certainly more than enough history to go around.”

Despite the supposed killing of lead character Lucius (Kevin McKidd), Heller claims it was deliberate that you didn’t see him on top of a funeral pyre and he is open to return.

The trade suggest the movie adaptation could deal with a Rome’s troubles with a certain Rabbi! Oh Jesus!

Discuss: Were you a fan of Rome? Would you go and see a big screen adaptation?

This show was the best show I have ever had the privlege of watching. It was the only reason I had HBO and upon hearing that is was ending I promptly canceled my HBO. The how was the perfect mix of extremely accurate History, compellingly dramatic fiction, action, comedy, and romance. Who could ask for more? There should be more than one movie if they get the go ahead to do some.

I have just 3 answers:

YES, YES and YES!!! I cannot wait for the film. This is one of the best series ever filmed! I enjoyed it thoroughly and was completely devastated when they canceled it!

What a real shame they couldn’t find a way to afford to keep the series going. But a film is better than nothing.
