In an interview with respected UK newspaper The Guardian (Sat 15th March, Guardian Guide) British comedy ace and all-round nice guy Simon Pegg revealed that recently he’s been hanging out with ”heterosexual life-partner” Nick Frost, and that they’ve been writing a new film.
Details are thin on the ground, but after a few projects without his Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz co-star, it’s cool to hear anything about a potential new picture from the pair. Of their current activity, Pegg said…
“We’re working on a road movie set in America about two British geeks. That’s all I’m saying right now; it’s hard to keep anything back these days.”
Even though there’s no mention of Edgar Wright, it’s worth wondering: is this proposed film going to be the grande finale of ‘The Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy’? Having tackled the horror genres and action genres in sublime style with Shaun of the Dead (a zom-rom-com) and Hot Fuzz (a balls-to-the-wall buddy-movie cop actioner… in Middle England) respectively, it’ll be really interesting to see what the team can do with the road movie format.
What makes the Wright/Pegg/Frost films so good is that they incorporate so many loving references and pastiches into their very-British revisions, but yet keep things uniquely fresh and imaginatively add new elements to well-trod turf.
There’s comedy potential in a plot of two British dweebs ‘doing’ America and Pegg and Frost have the comic capability to string the gags beyond the usual fish-out-of-water clichés. Obviously all this is a long way off so we’ll be stuck with the crucial enigma for ages yet. Shaun of the Dead was strawberry; Hot Fuzz was classico (a.k.a. vanilla): what flavour Cornetto will feature in film three?
