Robert De Niro is close to agreeing a deal to star opposite Mel Gibson in The Edge of Darkness, a thriller adaptation of a 1985 Bafta Award winning British t.v. series that was directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, Mask of Zorro).
Campbell is back to helm this remake, which was adapted by Academy Award Winning scribe William Monahan (The Departed) for GK Films.
Gibson stars as Thomas Craven, a straitlaced homicide detective for the Boston Police Dept. and single father, whose 24-year old daughter is murdered on the steps of his home. The cop assumes he was the target, but his investigation leads in another direction and uncovers his daughter’s secret life, a corporate cover-up and government collusion.
De Niro will play an operative sent to clean up the evidence.
Shooting begins later this month in Massachusetts.
The Edge of Darkness marks Gibson’s first significant film role since his 2002 turns in Signs and We Were Soldiers. The movie also marks the first ever pairing of De Niro and Gibson.

Hollywood always wins…or so it seems.
I live in Mass. And I work where they set up their base camp (in our parking lot). I scouted a location a few months ago (the old cold war bunker in Amherst, MA.) Right @ Bare mountain. I was going to shoot a science fiction film there in the winter. Funny thing happened though the luxury SUVs and movie trailers and guys with walkie talkies stormed in like a unstoppable rebel force. It was great to see it all. Exciting to see them film. I was left wondering though, I’m a screenwriter, and an aspiring director. I wish I could have talked with Graham King. Told him a little about myself, how I scouted their location before, and my screenplays one about World War III, the other about a vigilante who single handedly shuts down a mysterious polygamy sect. Maybe I should have talked to more of the crew or tried to approach a producer/actor/agent or writer. I didn’t want to bother them. Other people did though. I was the only one who actually had something to offer other than small talk. So please Mr. King or someone who knows him. I didn’t try and hand my script to you or anyone while you were there because you were busy and I have an awareness and respect for artists of your caliber. But now that the dust has settled, I believe I am a great writer. I have a one of kind style and my vision is unique. Will someone finally help a struggling artist?
