More writers are coming back to work.

Variety report that RKO Pictures have become the 13th studio to reach an agreement with the WGA, allowing writers to work on scripts for the independent company whilst the big studio’s like Paramount, Warner Brothers, Universal and Fox are stuck in strike action.

Interestingly the trades mention that RKO are expected to announce seven new original projects sometime next week which can now be given the go-ahead because of this deal, and future plans are expected to be revealed over the financing, production and distribution of new versions of some of the 1,000+ films locked in their library.

RKO, one of the 5 big studio’s of the “Golden Age” of cinema have been quiet on new films as of late with only last year’s ARE WE DONE YET? a film of any note since the late 90’s remake MIGHTY JOE YOUNG. These days the three letters RKO bring about more of a nostalgic grin for the classic films CITIZEN KANE and KING KONG, rather than the idea of a studio that has any worth in the industry in this time period.

It’s unknown what the seven projects will be, but they could well have something in common with the many 50’s classic horror movies (such as CAT PEOPLE, ISLE OF THE DEAD) which the studio last year declared they were hell-bent on remaking for new audiences.
