Ali Larter should be a happy bunny this morning. RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION has easily taken first place for the weekend’s box office and a further installment in the franchise seems inevitable. The actress hinted that come Monday morning, her fate would be decided and if we are to believe her, Milla Jovovich is out of the next movie and her character Clare Redfield will be the lead in the next RESIDENT EVIL outing.
The opening of $24 million is pretty consistent with the $23 million opening of the last movie back in September 2004 and it should see the third installment take $50 million domestic.
GOOD LUCK CHUCK actually did better than I expected. A second place $14 million is still a quiet one in truth but I thought that film was lined up to be a flop. Just goes to show that Jessica Alba is still a draw, despite her lack of acting ability.
THE BRAVE ONE and 3:10 to YUMA are holding it together at 3rd and 4th place respectively. David Cronenberg’s well reviewed EASTERN PROMISES went wide this week and opened to fifth place, taking in around $3 million less than his last movie A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE which had the same September release strategy. I would say PROMISES didn’t look as easily accessible as VIOLENCE, but personally I though it looked fab.
THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD opened to a $28,000 average on five sites but it will be slowly released wider of the coming weeks. The Sean Penn directed Oscar contender INTO THE WILD averaged $51, 700 per site at four locations whilst ACROSS THE UNIVERSE and IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH had quiet weeks.
THE HUNTING PARTY, that awful looking movie with Richard Gere and Terence Howard flopped to 24th place in it’s widest release opening yet. It’s opening of $34,000 is even less than what I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY made this weekend on it’s gazillionth week.
