Sam Raimi has been talking about the future of the SPIDER-MAN franchise once again and although he doesn’t say much that we haven’t heard before, it’s kind of the way he says it that interests me.
Lots of “If’s” and phrases like “starting over” indicate to me that he has almost put the series behind him.
Raimi said the following to Comic Book Resources…
If I was writing it I would have a very strong opinion about that, but we’re hiring a writer to come up with his own take. Sony was willing to go either way, we’ll just have to wait and see what the writer comes up with. I think anything’s possible, though.
I mean, there’s been so many different versions, it doesn’t have to follow the movies that we’ve made. I’d very much like to see Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man, so I have a personal interest in that, but certainly anything’s possible. Spider-Man’s such a big character in the comic books that he could endure a lot of different interpretations. You could start over or you could start with a different aspect of the story than I’ve focused on in the pictures I’ve made, we’ll just have to wait and see what the writer comes up with.
Well starting over with the franchise is just a terrible idea but coming up with a new direction for the series is something I’m very much in favour for, even if it means bringing in a new cast and crew.
For the series to have some real longevity and to fulfill the potential this franchise could have for years to come, SPIDER-MAN 4 needs to feel a little fresh and exciting.
Logically… the villain for me would be The Lizard and the whole focus on the entire film for me would be on his transformation to evil with NO OTHER VILLAINS.
Get back to a tighter and leaner story without the frantic direction. And Mr. Raimi… only direct this if you have your passion to tell the story the screen writer has written because I don’t want to watch another disjointed SPIDEY flick like SPIDER-MAN 3.

Not sure how I feel about this, I loved Spidey 1 & 2 but three was all over the place, there was some great moments in it to be sure but there was also some stinkers as well and the story well I think that’s been discussed to death.
I still think Raimi would have done a great job if he hadn’t been pressured from Avi Arad to put Venom in the mix but that’s all in the past now.
I’d love to see him direct another but only if it’s really what he wants to do and he’s left alone to do what he does best and it could be a good idea to let someone else write the thing.
