Dear Mr. Radcliffe,
I am by no means a Harry Potter fan. I have not read any of the books. I have seen only 1 and a half of the Harry Potter films. I didn’t like them. They aren’t my thing. However I know they delight so many people and I’m not going to begrudge anyone their pleasures. It’s not like it’s the Saw franchise where no effort is put into a film, these are well made pieces of cinema disguised as a children’s film.
Now Daniel Sir, you are 18 in a few weeks time which means you are younger than me but I’m perfectly fine in saying that you will have more money than my two eyes will ever look upon. You have all the potential in the world to become a steadily working Hollywood actor.
But note… you will never work in a franchise as big as Harry Potter.
Now I’m hearing some quotes from yourself that you have not yet signed on to film Harry Potter 7, the last film in the series’ franchise. This is what you said exactly, just incase you forgot…
“It all depends on the script and who’s going to direct it… It would be foolish to make it for the sake of it.”
Make for the sake of it, you say? Well what about making it for the Harry Potter fans? You will have made six films by then, don’t you think you owe the studio and the fans who made you this multi-millionaire to actually give something back and stop acting like a spoilt brat?
Has a bad script for Harry Potter been made yet… NO! You will earn a huge fortune for your role, you can not possibly think about dropping this franchise to the ground so late in the game. Mark my words your career would be DEAD if you didn’t shoot a last Potter film and you were replaced because you either A) wanted more money or B) because you believe it’s so “foolish” to finish what you’ve started.
Harry Potter isn’t your kitchen or living room D.I.Y. It’s a huge franchise which delights millions of fans globally. Don’t be a prick… sign up to the film… then do what the hell you want after that.
Yours sincerely,
Matt Holmes
(a non-Potter fan)

Lol, sounds a bit harsh me..to me it seems he didn’t want to commit to a film that could be rubbish, dont really see whats so bad about that. No need to call him a prick especially as all he said was he didnt want to make a film for the sake of it, which is surely true? From what I’ve saw of the guy he seems pretty much spot on in interviews so I can’t see him dropping the franchise just because he doesnt get enough money or whatever.
Come on dan it’s the final film! the book is bound to be one of the biggest selling of all time. When it comes to the final film there’s bound to be a decent script. Get ure arse in gear and make the final film. no matter wat happens now ure gonna b known as harry potter so u mite as well do the final film and move on. it would look completely stupid if the final harry was played by someone else, and if my harry potter theories are correct ure sure to have an amazing death scene. aint that every actors wet dream. u mite as well finish it even if it is for the sake of it. ure sure to get paid well for ure time.
Well said, Matt. Did you actually send this as an email to Dan Radcliffe? I definitely agree though with what you said. \
“Don’t be a prick… sign up to the film.” I’m sure THAT’LL give him some motivation.
Come on Matt, we’ve seen this before, with Anthony Hopkins before he did Hannibal (he spent months bitching that he was so SICK of Hollywood and was ready to quit) and with a bunch of other primadonna actors. If you’d found Daniel Radcliffe in 1998 -when NOBODY knew who the hell he was and he hadn’t even acted in so much as a dog food commericial- and asked him if he would have done Harry Potter the rest of his career, that child would have said “Of course! I LOVE this character! I’m having the time of my life!” In fact, I’m sure you can easily find quotes of him from 1998 saying just that!
Of course that was a decade ago. He’s since made a TON of money, is swamped by fans and female admirers, is envied, and probably hated, by every schoolmate he ever had -especially his pals from the conseravtory. He’s ten years older and a little -little!- weary of “being” Harry Potter, it’s not like a switch he can turn off. His face IS Harry Potter’s. Fans the world over may adore him, but most of them are kids under the age of twelve, and none of them are his friends, and I’m sure he doesn’t want to be “Harry Potter” the rest of his career/life. It’s VERY hard for a British actor to get into Hollywood, harder still not to be typecast as a stuffshirt, a butler or a snob, and even harder still for them to make it big in the US, and let’s face it, ALL the young English thesps want what Radcliffe’s got, since Hollywood is where the big paychecks and the big productions get made. And right now he’s the biggest “new” actor to come out of the UK in the last ten years; none of his HP co-stars have quite “broken out” yet, though they’ve been trying.
And no doubt Radcliffe has a sh*tload of false friends and groupies hoping to mooch some cash off him. He sounds like a young adult, who very much wants to be taken seriously and is making what he feels to be all the “right” sounds a young man of his age, and with his body of work (limited though it’s been) should be making. With the final HP chapter coming, this is his LAST chance to milk AOL Time-Warner for as much cash as possible, before residuals become the only money he ever makes from this franchise. Can he squeeze the studio for 20 mil per HP picture (there’s only two or so left to make) probably not. Can he get 15? Well, that’s do-able.
Perhaps Warner has TOTAL movie rights to the Potter character, and can make more movies in the series, movies unattached to the books (the same way Paramount can make more Jack Ryan movies, unrelated to Clancy novels) but Warner already is seeing they’ve milked this book franchise pretty good. So he’s probalby smart to pressure them while he still has a chance.
In my experience, the ONLY actors ever to walk away from a big and proven franchise when they had a guaranteed HUGE paycheck waiting for them, was Michael Keaton (he refused to do Batman Forever; which turned out to be the smart move) Keanu Reeves (he turned down Speed 2; which turned out to be a BRILLIANT move) and Jodi Foster (she refused to do Hannibal; which turned out to not be such a smart move).
Radcliffe will do make all the Potter movies, it’s not lie he has a ton of offers to do other movies, otherwise he would have been dong them. I’ll bet you a millon dollars his agent put him up to this. Right now he’s just doing what Kobe Bryant is doing to the LA Lakers basketball team: threatening to leave in order to force them to give him more money. Hey, it’s art, but it’s also a business.
